Position description

The technician will focus on the molecular mechanisms of human B cell activation and differentiation , under the guidance from the PI(s) and Research Assistant Professor(s), with latitude for exercising independent technical judgement to direct specialized research projects. This person will conduct basic science and clinical research with an emphasis on human blood sample processing and flow cytometry staining & acquiring. This person will be in charge of regular laboratory maintenance and operation including dish washing and ordering. This job is clinical-oriented at the BSL-II level, thus this individual needs to perform experiments with a high understanding of biosafety. Occasional late hours may be needed, based on patient sample collection schedule.


  • Plans and performs moderately complex laboratory experiments using techniques of flow cytometry, molecular engineering, tissue culture, microscopy and biochemistry and FACS staining & acquiring. Candidate will be working with both mouse and human samples, performing breeding and studies with these systems.

  • Works independently with occasional suggestions in modifying, varying or adapting standard laboratory procedures to meet special needs of research projects. Develops unique assays implementing alterations from a standard procedure based on research project needs after reviewing literature for novel techniques.

  • Searches literature for new trends or techniques to apply and adapt to needs of the laboratory and for reference to technical problems involved in research projects. Extracts, analyzes and interprets data within the scope of study. May make technical recommendations to Director/PI. Performs data analysis, and prepares reports, charts, graphs and tables. Assists in the preparation of materials for publication and proposals. Performs microscopy analysis of human primary cells and cell lines.

  • Keeps record of experimental details and results. Maintains compliance with laboratory regulations and norms. Keeps up-to-date with all training for human subject sampling and biosafety. May participate in training of Fellows and students on moderately complex laboratory techniques.

  • Organizes lab, and maintains inventories, ordering supplies when needed; maintains equipment as needed. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes simple repairs.

  • Performs reagent preparation and enters data in computer for analysis.


    Bachelor’s degree with major course work in Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology or related major and two years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with flow cytometry, sterile cell culture techniques, viral work and protein work is preferred. This individual must be dependable and be willing to work in a team setting.
