GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides direct research and teaching support at the professional entry level.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general guidance from the PI and with latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, performs research related activities limited in scope and complexity in a specialized field. Works independently with only occasional suggestions in modifying, varying or adapting standard laboratory procedures to meet special needs of research projects.

  • Establishment and maintenance of primary neuronal cell cultures and of clonal cell lines. Include media preparation, feeding, care, and sub- propagation of cells, treating cells for experiments, etc. Performs specialized surgical operations on laboratory animals for collection of specimens. Works closely with animal care staff and technicians for scheduling surgical procedures and post-operative care of animals. Manages, performs and conducts mouse colony maintenance including breeding, genotyping using PCR, health monitoring, and independent decision-making regarding rodent

  • euthanasia. Serves as interface between the lab, DCM, the vivarium, and UCAR. Troubleshoots and resolves issues with rodent colonies.

  • Performs analyses and scientific data reductions by using standard methods and develops modifications of standard methods to meet special situations. Analysis of neuronal structure and function following exposure to various treatments or conditions. Assays will include but not limited to western

  • blotting, cloning, plasmid preparation, transfection, and immunocytochemistry.

  • Manages the laboratory’s reagent inventory. Keeps research supplies stocked. Makes decisions and coordinates ordering of supplies and equipment. Performs in depth comparative research to obtain the best product at the best price. Provides informed recommendations to the PI for decision making. Meets with outside vendors and technical representatives to review equipment/laboratory needs and coordinate routine maintenance of

  • equipment. Maintains organized ordering records and tracks missing deliveries, troubleshoots and resolves supply and/or equipment errors.

  • Operates, maintains, and coordinates repair of laboratory and experimental testing equipment and apparatus such as spectrophotometers, analytical

  • balances, electron microscopes, centrifuges, thermal cyclers, CO2 incubators, and the like.

  • Teaches laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures to students and laboratory technical support staff; and counsels them on technical problems. Monitors and ensures lab personnel are up to date with training and compliance with Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety Unit, Safety Training for Research Laboratory Personnel, Institutional

  • Biosafety Committee, University Committee on Animal Resources, and additional training as required.

  • Searches literature for reference to technical problems involved in research projects, sometimes including literature in foreign languages; writes procedures; prepares charts, graphs and tables; and assists in the preparation of materials for publication. Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading professional journals and attending meetings, institutes and seminars.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in field of assignment, and 1-2 years of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers required.

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Wet bench biological/neuroscience techniques preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) preferred. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills and ability to work independently and as a member of a team preferred.

  • B.S./B.A. required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.38 - $28.56 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
