Position Summary:

Provides individualized assessment, and treatment to restore, remediate, or rehabilitate specialize aspects of physical, cognitive, emotional, or social functioning. Provides treatment to patients who have medical or other disabling conditions to improve functioning and independence in life activities.


  • Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment.

  • Evaluates all patients referred considering patient safety at all times. Identifies the patient's strengths and limitations in physical, cognitive, social, emotional functioning as well as behavioral functioning and interests in leisure/play. Conducts the assessment in a timely manner in accordance with standards and agency protocol.

  • Determines treatment for all patients, using evidence-based practice and as determined by evaluation, at the recommended frequency that is appropriate and feasible. Treatments include: functional interventions, therapeutic activities, recreation participation, leisure education, community skills training, and activities with other interdisciplinary team members, and peer support.

  • Implements individualized treatment using appropriate treatment interventions techniques. Implements group treatment using appropriate treatment interventions and facilitation techniques.

  • Documents in a timely manner on all patients according to Departmental Policy and Quality Improvement measures, including: evaluation findings/data, establish treatment program/ Plan of Care/Patient Education, determine recommendation for frequency of therapy, report patient progress, complete patient discharge summary, when applicable, maintain current physician orders, and complete productivity statistics accurately.

  • Communicates with local community programs for the purpose of assisting patients to seek appropriate programs for continued recreational therapy and reintegrate into community life after discharge.

  • Consults with other disciplines and team members in order to: promote the greatest degree of independent functioning possible within the patients' capabilities, participate in discharge planning by recommending equipment & community referrals, arrange teaching, as appropriate or assigned, attend Health Team rounds as needed or assigned and attend family discharge planning conferences as necessary.

  • Participates in other departmental activities including: orient and supervise TR students and volunteers as assigned, manages petty cash fund, assist with Quality Improvement projects, adhere to departmental policy for additional continuing education, be aware of contents of department Policy & Procedure manual, assist in developing and marketing new programs, thorough understanding of all equipment/modalities, participate fully in the department competency program, share in the responsibility of maintaining an Environment of Care, assist in coordinating care for vacations and illnesses and increase public awareness and knowledge of TR through reading and discussions with others, including other disciplines, medical students and resident teaching.


Bachelor's degree in recreational therapy or degree in recreation with a concentration in recreational therapy; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certification (CTRS), preferred. Master's in same or related field desirable.
