Responsibilities

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Provides network implementation services, operational support, and on-call responsibilities for the continually growing network infrastructure at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester Medical Center, and affiliated hospitals encompassing 500+ offices at 200+ geographically remote locations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to ensure optimum efficiency and program progress. Assists in the development of policies and procedures and ensures that documentation is kept current and complete.

  • Keep detailed, accurate documentation of project information, contacts, configuration settings, and designs. Participates in the identification, creation, and documentation of network standards, policies, processes, and procedures.

  • Specifies and implements network management systems, both physical and logical. Configures and deploys network management tools to monitor network capacity and maximize network availability.

  • Responsible for implementation of network services in accordance with current URMC design specifications for network topologies, electronics and distribution systems. Contributes to the development of network standards along with the creation of supporting documentation.

  • Oversees and Manages the design process from initial consultation to full design deployment to meet project milestones and go-lives. These include but are not limited to creating estimates and quotes for renovations, new locations and expansions.

  • Coordinates network solutions with vendors and internal customers. Work collaboratively with other Network Engineers, Desktop Support, Systems Administrators, Firewall Security, Policy and Compliance teams to design processes and services that meet Enterprise connectivity needs.

  • Trains, orients and mentors others on the team. Provides input to the budget process.

  • Provide expert technical knowledge, guidance, and training to other team members in best practices for network design, troubleshooting, and consulting.

  • Performs troubleshooting as required to identify root cause for any business impacting events.

  • Employee will be a daytime escalation resource for ServiceNow tickets through the Network Operations Center, identifying the issues, and resolving as needed.

  • Employee will participate in after-hours on-call rotation to support 24/7 network operations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Telecommunications or Engineering required

  • 4-5 years of related telecommunications experience required;

  • 2-3 years of supervisory experience required;

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required .

  • 4 years of experience working with large enterprise-wide LAN environments (preferably in a University or Hospital setting).

  • Familiarity with interconnection and troubleshooting techniques for network electronics and hardware, including optical networking concepts, routers, switches and/or centralized wireless controllers preferred.

  • Familiarity with network management tools, such as Intermapper, Solarwinds, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cacti, SNORt or equivalents preferred.

  • Familiarity with routing and switching protocols, including Cisco platforms, OSPF/BGP/iBGP and/or TDM, VoIP, SIP/RTP preferred.

  • Familiarity with structured cable plant components and techniques for both fiber and copper preferred.

  • Familiarity with network access control and surrounding technologies including but not limited to 802.1x and radius preferred.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and addressing preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills preferred.

  • Participation in Network Operations Center coverage. Participation in after-hours on-call rotation to support 24/7 network operations required .
