The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology focusing on using lasers to initiate fusion and high energy density physics.

Our team is growing , and we are seeking an experienced Sr. Technical Associat e to join our Mechanical Engineering Assembly group! We are a team who loves a challenge ! The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of cutting-edge technologies utilized in the OMEGA and OMEGA EP fusion-class laser systems. This entails working with high-precision components, assemblies, and diagnostics in a class 1000 cleanroom or vacuum environment, providing a dynamic and challenging work environment.

Who we are looking for:

An individual who loves tackling difficult tasks and possesses a strong ability to:

  • Build, test and troubleshoot sub-assemblies and top-level integration for state-of-the-art equipment.

  • Ensure all mechanical assemblies are built and tested according to the documented procedures

  • Care and maintain cleanroom associated components

  • Fabricate including setup and operation of manual vertical mills and lathes

  • Design, fabricate, and build jigs, test fixtures, and parts

  • Place component orders from a bill of materials

  • Read blueprints with GD&Tfamiliarity

  • Use common mechanical measuring equipment

You’re a great candidate for this role if you have:

  • Familiarity with welding techniques including TIG, MIG, and orbital

  • Completion of a NY state approved apprentice program in tool, mold, or instrument model making

  • Experience in the operation of CNC equipment

  • Machine building experience

  • The ability to function effectively independently and in a team environment

  • Successfully managed multiple projects of varying complexity

  • Basic computer skills and experience with programs such as MS Word and Excel

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of applicable experience
