Performs engineering work requiring full profession competency, a thorough knowledge of a special field of engineering and a good background in related fields.
Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment and action:
Provides engineering services in support of engineering and physical science research activities, encompassing mechanical, electrical, computer, or electronic design, systems analysis, feasibility analysis, instrumentation design, etc., the solution of engineering problems, the development of engineering projects and the supervision of fabrication.
Applying judgment in the application of new approaches and methods, complete phases of a research project independently or in conjunction with engineering and research specialists.
Troubleshoots and services commercial, in house built, and/or test equipment; may fabricate and/or supervise fabrication of equipment; assists in selection and purchase of components.
Participates in advancing the state-of-the-art; assists in the writing of research publications; develops and maintains contacts with vendors and professional associations.
May supervise lower classified engineers, technicians and clerical staff assigned to the project. Assists in advising student research projects.
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate engineering discipline plus 3-5 years of engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of education and engineering experience.
