The University of Rochester, Department of Family Medicine has well-established and continuously-funded programs of research on communication in healthcare, healthcare disparities, and population health, with a particular focus on promoting health equity. Our team has focused on pragmatic approaches to improving care for underserved minority populations (specifically in the areas of HIV/AIDS, depression, hypertension, cancer and other chronic conditions) and including improving access to care , access to care for deaf sign language users and people with hearing loss. Other areas of focus include end-of-life decision-making and clinician mindfulness.

URMC is also the Coordinating Center for the CTSA program nationally. Notably, Family Medicine faculty hold leadership roles within the CTSI and the Coordinating Center.
