Under the leadership of a tobacco control faculty member, the Sr Community Outreach & Engagement Research Coordinator (RC) will provide direct research support, and targeted assessment and outreach at the professional level to multiple community-based projects undertaken by the Wilmot Cancer Center program for Community Outreach and Engagement (COE). The RC will oversee and conduct subject recruitment, enrollment and retention activities including scheduling participant interviews, and will engage in participant tobacco control recruitment and retention activities.

Participates and facilitates research team meetings; supports farmworker initiatives; contributes to problem solving, implements and recommends solutions and tracks resolution. Must have the ability to deal effectively and professionally with a variety of persons ranging from external leaders of national organizations, senior faculty and other staff. This position will require the candidate to work some weekday evenings and possibly weekend hours.


Research Coordination – 75%

  • Supports research projects, contributes to writing of research proposals, and prepares regulatory documentation.

  • Manages the schedules for testing and interviews, locates patients and controls, obtains consent, administers testing and conducts interviews.

  • Develops and modifies test and study methods; Oversees subject recruitment and training for large nationally funded research studies, serves as a liaison with other funded sites, coordinates activities across sites nationally and locally developing detailed procedure manuals, and ensures protocol adherence and quality.

  • Assures that protocols and instruments are designed for use with Spanish speaking study participants.

  • Explains studies in detail, uses own judgment to answer participant questions, provides informed consent, conducts in-person and telephone interviews, and collects, analyzes and summarizes necessary health data.

  • Manages study documentation and databases and directs procedures for data collection and handling.

  • Ensures the quality of participant data by employing proper quality control procedures and attention to detail.

  • Manages participant information in the study’s electronic data capture system (REDCap and/or OnCore) with high quality. Performs on-site validity checks of data and obtains clarification as needed.

  • Verifies and analyzes study related information and review subject records to ensure complete and accurate data.

  • Responsible for participant incentive tracking and distribution, provides support with presentations, posters, manuscripts, and literature reviews.

  • Participates in scheduled research meetings, initial and ongoing study specific training, and works collaboratively with other team members.

  • Develops, prepares and submits study protocol revisions to the RSRB. Assesses adherence to protocols. Maintains competencies as described in the human subject protection and good clinical practice guidelines.

Data and Study Results Management– 20%

  • Analyzes and evaluates research data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program. Prepares written reports on all phases of work involved in research projects.

  • Oversees input of data from multiple sites into study database, contributes to data management and data analysis.

  • Performs routine data quality assurance procedures and resolves discrepancies.

  • Prepares and organizes study records, meetings, and minutes.

  • Drafts reports and manuscripts.

Keeps abreast of trends in the field by reading current research literature, and participates and presents at scientific meetings, seminars, and research conferences. Other projects and job duties as assigned – 5%


  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years relevant experience and education, including research, outreach, and presentation skills. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Tobacco control and smoking cessation certification or 2-4 years’ experience in the field strongly preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks, organize and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Excellent personnel management and leadership ability.

  • Strong attention to detail, records management; and database management skills.

  • Fluency in Spanish language skills strongly preferred.
