General Description:

The embedded clinical social worker is an integral member of the Wilmot Cancer Center team. He/she provides screening, psychosocial assessment, psychiatric diagnosis and brief, evidence based treatment for patients and families being served in the Wilmot Cancer Center. In this role, the clinical social worker also partners with medical social work to identify high risk patients with behavioral health and medical comorbidities, contributes to a unified person-centered treatment plan with the goal of improving the patient's overall health and well-being, and facilitates access to other specialty psychiatric and substance use care as needed. The position will require formal and informal collaboration with hematology/oncology physicians, nurse practitioners, medical social workers and other clinical team members.

This position will be based at the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital, the Wilmot Cancer Institute's flagship. This 84-bed cancer center offers patients and their family's comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, and it is home to one of upstate New York's largest blood and marrow transplant programs. As the region's leader in cancer research, Wilmot Cancer Center maintains a large network of clinical trials that offer new therapies and options that may not be available anywhere else upstate. The Wilmot Cancer Center offers inpatient and outpatient services, and responsibilities for this position will be shared across both settings.

This clinical service is an extension of an Office of Mental Health-regulated clinic which is part of Strong Behavioral Health and the Division of Collaborative Care in the Department of Psychiatry.


The social worker that occupies this position has a MSW from an accredited social work graduate program. They must be licensed by the State of New York (LMSW, LCSW, LCSW-R) and competency in providing cognitive and behavioral interventions to individuals, families, and groups. If licensure has not been obtained upon employment, the individual has 18 months within which to obtain it. Training and clinical experience in integrated behavioral heal1h and collaboration preferred.
