The Department of Ophthalmology Social Worker is responsible for providing interventional services to patients to assist Ophthalmology professional (and support) staff in the delivery of comprehensive care to patients. The Ophthalmology social worker is responsible for liaison with community agencies and other relevant providers, which impact patients in the SMH Dept. of Ophthalmology and Flaum Eye Institute Faculty Practice. The Ophthalmology Social Worker provides direct clinical services to identified patients and their families, to increase access to and improve utilization of ophthalmological services, on behalf of low-income and vulnerable individuals/families and those identified as being at psychosocial risk. The Ophthalmology Social Worker also participates in interdisciplinary collaboration with ophthalmology faculty and staff, with respect to program development, grant writing, research, and teaching, including the orientation and training of new staff and residents.
The Social Worker must hold a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited institution. Licensure as a social worker (LMSW), as defined by the State Board for Social Work, State Education Department Division of Professional Licensing Services is required within 18 months of employment. Relevant experience is preferred.
