General Description:

The Clinical Social Worker is an integral and embedded member of the Palliative Care team at URMC and the Wilmot Cancer Center team at URMC. This position will be shared across both of these clinical care programs. The therapist has latitude for initiative and independent judgment, and provides comprehensive, compassionate, person- and family­centered care to referred Oncology and Palliative Care patients, which includes: screening, psychosocial assessment, psychiatric diagnosis and brief, evidence-based treatment. In this role, the clinical social worker also partners with medical social work to identify high risk patients with behavioral health and medical comorbidities, contributes to a unified person­centered treatment plan with the goal of improving the patient's overall health and well­being, and facilitates access to other specialty psychiatric and substance use care as needed. The position will require collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical social workers, psychiatric consultants, administrators and other staff. The position also involves providing education and support to other clinicians and staff on the Palliative Care team.

This position will be based at the URMC Palliative Care Program and the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital, the Wilmot Cancer Institute's flagship. This clinical service is an extension of an Office of Mental Health-regulated clinic which is part of Strong Behavioral Health and the Division of Collaborative Care in the Department of Psychiatry.


The social worker that occupies this position has a MSW from an accredited social work graduate program. They must possess competency in providing cognitive and behavioral interventions to individuals, families, and groups. Training and clinical experience in palliative care, grief assessment and therapy, and bereavement is preferred. Licensure is required within 18 months of employment.
