POSITION SUMMARY

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is seeking candidates for the position of a Scientist to support the experimental physics research program on OMEGA, OMEGA EP and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser facilities. The candidate will play an essential role in designing and leading experimental campaigns on those facilities within the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) program, perform data analysis of the results from those campaigns, and develop new x-ray diagnostics. The primary responsibilities include:

  • The development of a Fresnel Zone Plate Imager with a monochromator for Omega experiments

  • Leading laser imprint and hydro-instability experiments on Omega and NIF

  • Leading energy coupling experiments on NIF using x-ray radiography of laser-irradiated, solid-sphere targets

  • Contribute to the innovative concept of the formation of dynamic shells using foam ball targets

  • Perform x-ray radiography experiments of Polar-Direct-Drive implosions on OMEGA and NIF

Further responsibilities are the collaboration with external users. The candidate should possess a PhD degree in Physics or a closely related field, preferably with a strong research experience in experimental high energy density physics or internal confinement fusion research. Required are a good knowledge of HEDP x-ray instrumentation and advanced computer skills for designing the experiments and analyzing the data. The candidate should possess interpersonal skills suitable for working in a team-based environment. Strong writing skills are required for the preparation of peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will join the OMEGA Experiments group as a Scientist depending on previous work experience.
