Full Time 40 hours Grade 000 Anesthes & Periop Med ResearchResponsibilities
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is seeking a candidate at the Research Assistant Professor level to conduct research in basic cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate vacuolar based mechanisms of protein clearance with an emphasis on autophagy and the processes that regulate the degradation of the tau protein in neurons. These investigations are then extended by determining how a dysregulation of these processes may contribute to neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. Candidates with prior experience in using cell models and doing autophagy studies is necessary. The specific focus of the studies will be on determining the cellular and molecular role of specific regulators of autophagy, as well as endocytosis in mediating the clearance of tau, and then extending these studies to determine how a dysregulation of these regulators may contribute to neurodegeneration in diseases in which there is tau pathology like Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will utilize various techniques, including super resolution cell imaging, mass spectrometric analyses and optogenetic protocols. The candidate will also overexpress or knockdown expression of specific proteins in vivo by doing intrahippocampal AAV administration in mice.
Supervision and instruction of graduate students and lab technicians is required. The candidate will oversee their day-to-day activities and provide oversight in their experiments. The candidate will provide support for other projects in the lab, will assist in writing grant proposals, manuscripts for publication, and abstracts for presentation at national and international meetings. The candidate will also be given time to develop an independent research program.
PhD in biological science with at least 4 years of postdoctoral experience in biochemistry, physiology, genetics, neurobiology or related fields. In addition to college level courses in Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Cell Biology and Medical Statistics, a graduate level course in Molecular Biology is needed. The successful candidate must have a significant record of publications and be independently motivated with excellent written and oral communication skills.
