The Regional Associate Director (RAD) represents the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering of the University of Rochester to all constituents seeking information about the admission process: prospective students, families, school officials, and others. Serves as the university’s primary representative in a region covering multiple states and works autonomously. The RAD is required to travel and must be willing to work long hours during peak travel and review seasons. The ideal appointee must have proven leadership ability, proficiency with technology, and strong communication skills.
The RD must exercise considerable independent judgment to devise new and creative approaches, solve complex and difficult problems, challenge the status quo and proactively anticipate the needs of their respective region. Admissions representatives must possess demonstrated customer service experience that incorporates a global perspective along with a commitment to issues of diversity and the ability to work in a team setting with all levels of management, faculty, and staff. Residency in Washington, D.C., required (Virginia or Maryland may be considered.)
35% Program Management:
Directs a team of on campus travelers during fall and spring travel and assigns travelers to regional travel territories. Oversees the entire travel process for team members to provide higher level strategy regarding recruitment across the assigned regional territory. Approves or modifies travel proposals from team members to ensure that regional programs remain aligned with and directly contribute to enrollment goals
Formulates, creates, and maintains yearly fiscal regional budget. Approves budgets submitted by team members for fall and spring travel. Responsible to ensure that travelers maintain a budget plan that adheres to division wide goals.
Uses high level decision making to craft a strategy (interview events, college fairs, etc.) on how to best engage students across the regional territory in an effort to drive increased applications.
Manages travel team debrief and conducts team audit to produce reports for senior managers. Provides this feedback to team members and their supervisors to ensure that travel recruitment has been successful within overall department goals. Has wide latitude to shift future travel planning based on these reports.
Meets annually with dean and other team leads to create territory boundaries and appropriate staffing levels. Matches staff to specific territories based on each individual’s particular skills and expert knowledge of the needs in the region to ensure continued recruitment success in territory.
Directs yield activity in territory using expert knowledge of territory needs to plan region specific events aimed at enrolling the best students from each area.
25% Program Coordination:
Oversees team file review. Creates file allotments for each team member, assigns all team applications to individual readers with the best institutional knowledge of each region in alignment with department wide reading guidelines.
Oversees file reading pace for entire team to ensure that files are read in the most efficient manner. Meets with each individual team member to create a strategy that ensures readers meet department wide reading goals.
Directs movement of files between team members and/or to other teams when reading pace lags. Uses high level knowledge of the reading process and pace to ensure that the team does not fall behind weekly reading goals.
Leads committee review for territory team. Schedules and leads weekly (sometimes more often) committee review meetings to decide which applications are reviewed during committee based on shifting departmental needs.
Co-manages year round alumni engagement in region with Director of Volunteer Programs. Oversees team member travel plans to ensure that there is a region wide strategy to engage alumni as interview and college fair volunteers. This impacts the overall recruitment strategy and creates additional resources for our interview events and college fairs which often could not be covered without alum assistance.
Develops and sustains Community Based Organization (CBO) relationships in region, often serving as University point of contact. Uses expert knowledge of territory to understand which CBOs in the region make sense as the best partners to help us meet department wide goals for engaging more first generation and underrepresented students.
Manages high school counselor relations for region. Uses expert knowledge of the region as well as the independent and public school communities in particular to understand which counselors to engage and how to engage them. Develops relationships with counselors through large and small events that allow our travelers access to high schools and high school programs that we have not had access to in the past.
20% General Counseling / Recruitment Travel:
Responsible for providing enhanced and direct customer service to all constituents in their assigned region.
Identifies prospective students and has frequent contact with independent agents and agencies by conducting market/territory research and implements travel planning accordingly.
Manages and plans extensive (10+ weeks) high school and university visits, off-campus admissions interviews and receptions, college fairs, and alumni events in assigned regions.
Responsible for on-going communication and developing sustained relationships with secondary schools, higher education senior leaders (Administrators), agents and agencies, counselors, and alumni admissions volunteers.
Prepares, delivers and coordinates presentations for prospective students and families. Performs regular off-campus interviews.
Frequent telephone and email contact with prospective students, families, and secondary school counselors regarding the admissions process and the status of multiple and on-going admissions decisions.
15% Application Review:
Reads 500+ undergraduate applications from assigned regions and schools.
Reads transfer applications from assigned regions and schools/universities.
Makes recommendations and consults with senior leaders in the department regarding admissions decisions: admit, wait list, deny, etc.
Makes recommendations with senior leaders in the department regarding merit scholarship decisions
Collaborates with senior level management on over 1,000 admission decisions.
Continued growth and development in the field of admissions through attendance at conferences, workshops, (etc.) as a participant, panelist, presenter, or moderator as needed.
Frequently communicates with the Rochester Home Office to ensure that the RAD’s available schedule remains aligned with the customer service goals of the office and to establish a regular connection and relationship with staff in the office.

Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of progressive experience in staff or project management. Master’s degree and 5-8 years’ experience in higher education with an emphasis on college/university admissions preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid driver’s license. Residency in Washington, D.C. required (Virginia or Maryland may be considered).How To Apply
