Quality Assurance Technical Specialist, Surgical Pathology

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Quality Assurance Technical Specialist is responsible for assisting in validation and troubleshooting equipment, tracking maintenance of laboratory equipment and necessary follow-up/corrective actions. This person will work closely with the assistant supervisors, supervisors and lead technicians, to build up and maintain the Quality program as designed by the department
The Quality Assurance specialist is expected to participate in all accreditation inspections and tracer audits. They are also expected to perform the duties of a histologist.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:
The Quality Assurance specialist reports to the Surgical Pathology Supervisor; generally works independently, with guidance from the Surgical Pathology Supervisor, Chief Supervisor, and/or Faculty Directors.
MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Regularly utilizes standard histology laboratory equipment including PC, Laboratory Information System (LIS) microtomes, tissue processors, embedding centers, automatic cover slipper, microscopes, chemical reagents, dyes, glassware, measuring devises, automated stainers, and other equipment of similar scope and complexity.
JOB DUTIES :
Reviews routine maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repair of equipment. Maintains repair and maintenance logs for equipment. Monitors for trends to provide feedback to the department regarding equipment needs. (15%)
Participates in review of procedures and protocols as assigned by the Supervisor. (5%)
Oversees the Clinical Trial workflow to assure cases are processed and signed out in a timely manner. (5%)
Adheres to FDA, NYS, Joint Commission, and CAP regulations and acts to implement compliance, change and /or corrective action. Interacts with regulatory inspectors. (5%)
Provides information to the Chief Supervisor on a monthly/quarterly basis regarding the Departments Quality program. Provides suggestions for improvement (5%)
Monitors and reports safety related issues as it pertains to the operations of the lab (5%).
Duties and responsibilities of a Histologist. Participates in on-call rotation (55%)
Other duties and projects as assigned. (5%)
QUALIFICATIONS :
ASCP Certification as an HT/HTL preferred. At least 6 years of clinical laboratory experience in Histology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be NYS licensed or eligible for licensure as a Medical Technologist (MT).
