Deaf Strong Hospital is an educational activity with first year medical students at UR SMD. This role-reversal exercise requires the involvement of at least 40 deaf actors to play the role of healthcare professionals while the medical students play their role as patients. This is to sensitize the medical students on issues related to working with patients who use English as a second language. The actors are given various roles to play; doctors, psychiatrists, pharmacists, and receptionists. Each actor will undergo a brief training to learn the do’s and don’ts of role play exercise, and rehearse a prepared script prior to the actual activities/exercise with students. Additionally, the actors assist with the setting up and clean-up of tables, chairs, signage, materials, exhibit assembling and dissembling portable privacy curtains.
The Deaf actors must be Deaf and fluent in American Sign Language.
