GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Humanities Collections Intern will work with a team of Humanities Librarians to support collection and scholarly communication needs in relevant disciplines. The intern will contribute to an ongoing project to develop processes and contribute to an open access toolkit focused on analyzing the scholarly output of humanities scholars. This will include collecting, analyzing, and cleaning data, creating detailed documentation, and communicating with both library and faculty stakeholders. Additionally, the intern will work with librarians to assess a small portion of the library’s monograph collection (e.g., Ukrainian history) to identify gaps and recommend new purchases, plan and curate a “Collection Highlight” exhibit, and develop asynchronous learning materials such as an online research guide (i.e., LibGuide). The intern will gain experience working in standard library tools such as LibGuides and Camtasia, as well as online publishing platforms such as WordPress or PressBooks.

The intern must be enrolled in 120 credit hour internship/practicum at their home college or university. This internship is a temporary position from June-August 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to a Humanities Publication Analysis Toolkit (HPAT) designed to help library staff understand, evaluate, and promote humanities research at the institution

  • Compile a literature review on humanities bibliometric research

  • Work with faculty and librarians to develop best practices and identify needs

  • Collect, analyze, and clean data

  • Write documentation

  • Communicate findings to stakeholders

  • Analyze and assess a portion of RCL’s collection to identify gaps and develop a strategy/recommendation for purchasing new materials particularly from and about marginalized groups and communities

  • Develop and build an online research guide for a specific subject area and create asynchronous instructional content to support research and student learning

  • Plan and curate a “Collection Highlight” of RCL materials around a specific theme or topic

  • Participate in regularly scheduled activities such as department meetings, collections team meetings, and project-based meetings and discussions where appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an ALA accredited MLS/MLIS or related degree program required

  • Degree or coursework in a humanities field or discipline preferred

  • Job-related experience in an academic or research library

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, fields, with a team focus preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a willingness to ask questions, troubleshoot, and obtain clarification when needed preferred

  • Interest in academic librarianship and/or scholarly communications required

  • Knowledge of humanities research and publishing practices preferred

  • Strong research, writing, analytical, and oral communication skills preferred
