The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) fosters collaborative leadership between community partners, students, and other University stakeholders to discover transformative solutions and create equitable social change in the local community and beyond. As a vital member of the staff of the CCE, this position manages strategic initiatives designed to increase the number of faculty and students that participate in high-impact, community-engaged learning efforts, such as faculty grants to support the development and implementation of courses taught in a community-engaged format. The program manager advises and supervises students as needed to facilitate these programs, seeking to foster students’ leadership whenever possible. The program manager also coordinates campus and community partnerships relevant to these programs to ensure shared ownership and mutual benefit, and that the programs are addressing community-identified needs. The position interacts with other key stakeholder, including faculty members, College staff, and alumni. The Program Manager reports to the associate director for community-engaged learning and is be expected to coordinate closely with other staff to ensure efficient program operations and that programs complement other offerings in the Center. The position contributes to Center-wide initiatives when necessary, including strategic communications and outreach, and will serve as a vital member of the staff.


Program Management

Resource Management

  • Manages the administration of faculty course operation grants and course development grants that support the delivery of community-engaged courses.

  • Manages program budget, tracking account funds, reimbursements, journal transfers, and teaching and research assistant pay for community-engaged courses; certificate program expenses and professional development funds for students, faculty, and staff; as well as costs associated with events and promotion of programs).

  • Initiates and tracks requests to department administrator for reimbursements, journal transfers, and student employee pay.

  • Manages inventory of community-engaged learning courses and conduct regular audits to determine the relevance and scope of courses and projects. Identifies gaps and opportunities, makes recommendations for future directions.

  • Coordinates transportation requests related to community-engaged learning with campus partners and external vendors.

  • Coordinates and facilitates regular meetings of the Community-Engaged Learning steering committee, comprising Staff, Community Partners, and Faculty.

Advising and Professional Development

  • Serves as primary advisor to students interested in and pursuing the certificate in community-engaged learning. Advises students during onboarding, providing ongoing program advising as needed.

  • Creates and manages professional development opportunities for faculty and staff pursuing community-engaged learning, including facilitating regular meetings for faculty to share best practices, an annual retreat, and promoting opportunities to attend and present at regional or national conferences

  • Provides initial consulting for faculty interested in community-engaged learning and pedagogy, serves as a resource for faculty developing new courses and seeking grant funding.

  • Supports instruction of advanced seminars for certificate in community-engaged learning, consulting on syllabus development and instructional activities, provides logistical support.

  • Manages recruitment and onboarding of undergraduates and/or recent graduates to participate in community engagement programs with an aim to complement their academic studies and foster personal and professional growth.

Promotion and Outreach

  • Oversees development of community-engaged learning outreach materials including print, web, videos, and other visual media

  • Plans and executes events to promote community-engaged learning by bringing together engaged faculty.

  • Conducts targeted and broad outreach to recruit AS&E undergraduates for the program, utilizing University publications, social media, email marketing, and group presentations.

  • Supervises program assistant student employee position focused on promotion & outreach through weekly check-ins, goal setting, and annual performance evaluation.

  • Coordinates with and supports Faculty Fellows in the strategic promotion of community-engaged learning.

Strategic Communications

  • Promotes and publicizes programs to recruit students, community partners, and other collaborators as needed to ensure effective program delivery.

  • Coordinates with Operations Manager to leverage Center’s social media outlets and other relevant media projects to enhance audience engagement.

  • Oversees the Center’s website and blog content.

  • Collaborates with staff from University communications and AS&E web team to develop and maintain websites and promotional materials that advance the Center’s mission.

  • Recommends and develops additional publications and media to communicate the Center’s work

Program Evaluation, Improvement, and Planning

  • Manages student pipeline for programs, tracking prospective students, and the Center’s reach across campus related to community-engaged learning. Identifies and develops outreach opportunities to promote programs, incorporating and overseeing student participation in speaking opportunities. Follows up with interested students in one-on-one meetings.

  • Collaborates with the registrar to maintain accurate records of student program completion.

  • Collects and organizes all student capstone proposal and portfolio materials for review by the Steering Committee.

  • Maintains detailed data collection and operational documentation for programs to facilitate assessment and sustainability.

  • Develops, analyzes, and reports periodically on program outcomes as needed for internal leadership and external funders.

  • Collects and analyzes assessment data, including assessment of training and programmatic outcomes for both program participants, faculty grants, and community partners.

  • Utilizes assessment results to inform planning for programs, modifying them to improve program effectiveness as needed.

  • Identifies and communicates problems and areas for improvement, or where program participants, stakeholders, and resources are at risk.

  • Contributes to strategic planning for the Center as needed.

Staff Supervision and Management

  • Supervises undergraduate students as needed to ensure effective delivery of programming, ensuring compliance with university policies and relevant employment regulations.

Other duties as assigned

  • Attends staff and team meetings for Center Serves on ad hoc and standing committees within and beyond the Center.


  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Master’s degree preferred

  • 2-4 years of related experience working with college undergraduate students and/or with community development programming and partnerships or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Excellent organizational, planning, written and verbal communication, and problem-solving skills required.

  • The ability to work autonomously within a team of skilled professionals required.

  • Experience in or a strong familiarity with higher education and the University of Rochester preferred.

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Rochester region and various assets and challenges preferred.

  • Demonstrated competencies in cultural humility and equity preferred.

  • Ability the interface effectively and appropriately with various stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, and community partner organizations required.

  • Familiarity with community-based teaching and learning and/or experiential learning strategies preferred.

  • Competencies in online program management platforms (Slack, Tableau, Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Google Suites, and familiarity with cloud-based communications and file-sharing platforms, etc) required.

  • Experience with program evaluation, assessment, and data analysis preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $50,752 - $71,053 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
