The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) seeks an outstanding academic leader with a substantial record of clinical, teaching, scholarly, and administrative accomplishments to serve as the next Chair, Department of Imaging Sciences. This is a unique opportunity for a new Chair to collaboratively lead and expand upon a nationally recognized Department through integrated clinical program delivery and advanced imaging services across a rapidly growing regional System, while further enhancing the research reputation and capabilities of a Department known for its important history, and innovations, in one of the most respected healthcare institutions in the country. The current Chair, Dr. David Waldman has led the Department since 2003 and will be stepping down effective January 2019 to assume a leadership role at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) as Chief Medical Technology Officer.

URMC and UR Medicine (the clinical enterprise across all sites) form the centerpiece of the university's medical research, teaching, patient care, and community outreach missions. It has an integrated administrative structure led by Mark Taubman, M.D., Dean, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Chief Executive Officer, URMC, and Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, UR. Reflecting this integration, the Chair of Imaging Sciences also serves as clinical chief of radiological services for the health system.

The SMD is a highly prestigious, widely respected, and academically productive center for the education and training of physicians, dentists, and investigators, basic and translational research initiatives, and overall clinical excellence. The School ranks in the top quartile of U.S. academic medical centers in research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

As the leader in the delivery of radiological services, the Chair must be strategically and operationally focused to guide the Department to the next level through the advancement of research, education, and clinical programs while continuing to meet and exceed national standards of excellence. We seek a Chair who understands and fosters an academic environment, as he/she will be responsible for continuing to raise the bar on medical education and build upon the Department’s research efforts.

The Chair will have the demonstrated ability to inspire, manage, and mentor faculty, learners, and staff. This position requires a thorough understanding of the healthcare environment, both regionally and nationally, a vision for the growth of clinical services, and a dedication to developing the next generation of radiologists. She/he must also demonstrate an ability to collaborate with other leaders across URMC and UR Medicine to effectively formulate strategy, build market share, and provide high quality care.

We seek candidates with prior administrative and leadership experience gained within a Department of Radiology/Imaging Sciences, a leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills that complement a passion for excellence and achievement. Candidates must be physicians, certified by the American Board of Radiology, who are Professors and/or possess qualifications for appointment as Professor in the SMD.

The successful candidate will be an individual who has a passion for providing outstanding care and excellence in customer service, a desire to improve systems and processes to maximize efficiency, the leadership to engage faculty and hold them accountable, and an enduring commitment to provide an environment conducive to maximizing education and growing research.

The search process is currently underway and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations, confidential expressions of interest, and candidate materials (including a letter of interest and CV) should be submitted via email to the URMC search consultants. Please contact Linda Komnick or Dr. Beth Frye through the office of Vinny Gossain at, 630-575-6957.
