Physician Support Spec - Surgery Scheduler

Responsibilities

The Surgery Scheduling Specialist performs surgery scheduling functions in a high volume fully computerized environment. Acts as a professional liaison for staff, other hospital personnel, medical staff, and physician’s offices. Position requires utilization of clinical knowledge to schedule appropriate procedures/surgeries per provider’s orders. The Surgical Scheduler must schedule outpatient and inpatient procedures consistent with the patient’s diagnosis and procedure request. Also requires strong customer service skills with patients, employees, and the public in addition: typing, experience using computerized documentation systems, and problem solving. The Surgical Scheduler must be able to respond to both written and oral correspondence regarding scheduling changes/cancellations in a timely, accurate manner. Individual must be organized, and be able to manage demanding workload with accuracy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Schedule surgeries based on surgeons’ schedules and available dates. Schedule with appropriate provider and time/location slot, utilizing appropriate scheduling codes. Schedule post-surgical appointments with doctors and necessary tests. Walk patients and families through instructions about “things to do” before and after surgeries

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma and Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Medical Terminology, experiences with surgical/appointment scheduling software (such as Flowcast), and electronic medical records, preferred.

  • Must demonstrate customer relations skills, consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Critical thinking skills and a positive attitude essential.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

  • Able to work both independently and as a Team
