Works independently performing donor registration, health history, and physical exam of donors prior to donation. Performs donor phlebotomy and processes the donated blood component. Uses various computer systems to enter and maintain accurate documentation of the donation. Demonstrates effective communication and patient management skills. Complies with the overall goals of the Donor Room Program. Performs non-licensed point of care testing to support clinical trial initiatives and studies.
Patient Registration and pre-donation evaluation (20%): Greets donor in reception area. Verifies patient registration information. Performs donor interview, health history and physical exam. Evaluates donor for suitability using standard donation criteria under the guidance of the Blood Bank Medical Director.
Blood Donation Collection (20%): Performs various safe phlebotomy techniques to collect autologous and research blood donations as well as routine specimen collection when required.
Special Projects Support (20%): Performs non licensed Point of Care testing to support clinical trial initiatives and studies.
Pre-analytical Processing (10%): Accurately completes all necessary computer and paperwork associated with a donation. Properly processes samples for Blood Bank serologic and infectious disease testing if necessary. Properly packages blood products for transport when transfusion is planned at a different facility. Properly transports products to the Blood Bank for long term storage.
Operational Support (10%): Participates in inventory management, daily maintenance duties, quality control procedures, and equipment maintenance.
Administrative Support (10%): Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication and patient management skills.
Other duties as assigned by the Donor Room Coordinator (10%)
Reports to Donor Room Coordinator
Confers with the Blood Bank Medical Director or designee.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with six months of phlebotomy experience, or graduation from a phlebotomy training program; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, or certification. Customer service experience preferred.
