Oversees the team responsible for pharmacy IT infrastructure to support the operations for all inpatient, outpatient and/or clinical pharmacy services within the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and its affiliates. Responsible for supervision of all direct reports to ensure safe and efficient medication management for all patients in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Works collaboratively to provide pharmacy services to all patients of URMC and its affiliates. Provides direction for the development and implementation of new programs focusing on pharmacy IT and Informatics to develop services to enhance patient care and other services related to integrated medication management within clinical and revenue information system projects.
Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:
Provides direction and oversight for pharmacies at URMC and its affiliates as it pertains to pharmacy and related IT systems; this includes staff pharmacists, supervising pharmacists, technician supervisors, and other managers as well as the entire pharmacy IT staff.
Participates in key committee memberships (patient safety groups, medication systems evaluation teams, operational lean team etc.) and maintains a leadership role within these groups when appropriate.
Develops and implements policies and procedures across URMC pharmacies and affiliate pharmacies to ensure compliance with State and Federal Regulations to promote appropriate patient care and safety and IT roles. This includes accreditation and licensing requirements and formal professional standards pertaining to drug distribution, utilization and control and use of the information systems and IT roles to support these.
Develops, implements, and monitors plans for recruitment, interviewing, training, competency and performance reviews of all pharmacy IT staff. Provides direction and opportunity to individual staff members for professional development that would strengthen the individual’s capabilities as well as those of the department.
Identifies opportunities for expansion and improvement of pharmacy services to inpatient, outpatient and clinical areas, including staffing assessments, clinical opportunities, and evaluation of automation or other technology to enhance patient care.
Provides documentation/data specific to medication use to staff/specialists within and outside the department to maintain proper Quality Assurance goals and medication use tracking.
Identifies and suggests budget recommendations. Controls personnel, supply, and expense budgets of assigned programs.
Coordinates and oversees business plan implementations, renovations, constructions, relocations, and evaluates technology/automation to further enhance pharmacy operations. Determines, justifies, and recommends capital equipment requirements.
Responsible for Project management of pharmacy IT projects and medication related enhancements and rollouts of the EHR and ancillary systems. Coordinates and oversees pharmacy IT business plan implementations including planning, IT budget, resource management, timeline, issues and risks, communication and coordination with other departmental and institutional projects and deadlines.
Acts as pharmacy resource for Office of Counsel, Nursing leadership, Information System Division (ISD) and medical leadership to address issues around adverse medication events, diversion of controlled substances and medication use within the EHR. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission medication management standards.
Maintains and oversees a team of analysts that troubleshoots medication information systems and the EHR when appropriate including monitoring of security restrictions and auditing. Maintains role as Director- Pharmacy IT of EHR and other automation in Pharmacy.
Maintains contact with the members of the medical staff, and other professional and administrative staff of URMC and its affiliates to serve as liaison to resolve patient care issues and IT related problems.
Actively participates in teaching opportunities within URMC as well as in the community. Maintains contact/membership with local and national organizations and participates in educational meetings when appropriate.

Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy, Master’s Degree preferred, and 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy with 3 years in pharmacy management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prefer Doctor of Pharmacy, and at least 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy with 3 years in pharmacy management; or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years’ experience with relevant pharmacy informatics and technology systems preferred. License to practice Pharmacy in the State of NY or eligibility.
