Position Summary:

With some latitude, the position works in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) setting under the direction of CPEP Leadership. The focus of this position is to provide services that engage, support, and empower patients who are in a mental health crisis to regain personal control over their lives and over their own recovery process. The position provides a role model for recipients and helps them to cope during their CPEP stay and with their transition from CPEP.


  • Works collaboratively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

  • Engages patients by active listening, building rapport, and trust

  • Models for and supports all staff in using strategies and approaches that reduce stigma, engage and partner with patients, and promote patient-driven decision making

  • Interacts with patients as a peer and shares common experiences in a way that benefits the patient in this setting

  • Assists patients in identifying areas in which they need support, and identifying existing natural supports

  • Assists patients in identifying and learning how to exercise their rights

  • May assist patients in developing a safety plan if indicated

  • May assist patients in communicating their Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP plan) if they have one.

  • Helps patients advocate for themselves in communicating with staff

  • Supports patients in navigating CPEP processes

  • Strengthens patient satisfaction by assisting patients in identifying and voicing concerns in a productive manor, addressing and helping to resolve them to the patient's satisfaction.

  • Supports the completion of satisfaction surveys and monitors the results.


    Lived experience with emotional, mental, or behavioral health challenges and navigating mental health services and community resources. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Preferred New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS) credential. Two years of active participation as a Peer Specialist preferred. Willingness and availability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends and evenings. Ability to verbally engage and empathize with patients and their natural support systems based on common experiences. Ability to model skills to individuals. Participates in ongoing peer networking and training.
