Orthotics/Prosthetics Fitter

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides independent patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, applying all manner of fracture casts, fitting and adapting of assistive devices and coordination of patient care with other health care professionals. Usually works in accordance with standard procedures and practices. Exercises a high degree of judgment and skill.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

May train and coordinate activities of peers or support staff.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard office equipment including computer, calculator, telephone, facsimile. Uses electronic medical record system. May set up, operate and make adjustments to various medical machines and equipment including Trautman Carver, Drill Press, Vacuum Forming System, Sewing Machines, Thermoplastic Oven, Band Saw, Cast Saw and all type of hand tools, including electric hand tools, grinders, sanders and other tools as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Clinical Assessment:

  1. Obtains a history of the patient, evaluates patient, and examines the patient manually. Determines the needs of the patient by integrating the information obtained from history, examination and observation in order to assess the specific needs of the patient. Analyzes the data obtained by empirical methods in order to prepare a recommendation.

  2. Collaborates with patient, family and involved providers to develop a treatment protocol for the specific patient and to determine a specific device recommendation and plan for its use.

  3. Obtains and accurately records appropriate measurements and other data from the patient in order to produce the device recommended.

Patient management:

  1. Measures a patient by utilizing proper instruments and tests in order to compile data to be used in prosthetic and orthotic design and fabrication. Manipulate the patient's body or body segments to provide correction.

  2. Properly fist orthotic designs by utilizing accepted prosthetic/orthotic techniques in order to achieve optimum fit, function and cosmesis.

  3. Evaluates a patient's gait by visual observation in order to achieve optimum prosthetic or orthotic function.

  4. Achieves optimum alignment of patient's prosthetic/orthotic device by evaluation of the sagittal, transverse and coronal planes in order to provide maximum function.

  5. Manages a simple, stable fracture utilizing prefabricated orthoses.

  6. Follows up with patient care in order to assure proper fit and function of the prosthetic/orthotic device by periodic evaluation.

  7. Provides the solution to a patient's prosthetic/orthotic problem by appropriate evaluation in order to achieve proper function.

  8. Educates the patient on the various procedures you are about to perform and/or explain his/her role and responsibilities regarding these procedures by utilizing appropriate communication skill in order to achieve successful fabrication and utilization of the prosthetic/orthotic device.

Practice Management:

  1. Communicates patient information to referring physicians and other healthcare providers to achieve ultimate patient care.

  2. Follows procedures for patient care that comply with accepted medical/legal requirements by maintaining current education in these areas to provide appropriate patient care in order to avoid legal ramifications.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT LEVELS:

Level 1 - Eligibility for Hire and/or Advancement:

  1. Minimum of a high school degree

  2. Entry level up to 3 years of experience

  3. Ability to interact with patients and physicians on a professional level

  4. Willingness and ability to learn

  1. Successful completion of probationary period including required competencies

  2. Proficient in all required responsibilities of the role.

  1. Successfully performs all Level 1 requirements

  2. Certification by American Board for Certification of Orthotics,

  3. Prosthetics and Pedorthics or equivalent

  4. Minimum 1 year of experience as independent fitter

Role Expectations:

  1. Demonstrates proficiency in all job responsibilities

  2. Demonstrates competence with assigned patients

  3. Ability to work independently without direct supervision

  4. Organizes time to support department activity

  5. May supervises Orthotic interns, students and other personnel as needed

Level 3 - Eligibility for Hire and/or Advancement:

For Inpatient Fitter:

  1. Successfully performs all Level 2 requirements and role expectations

  2. Minimum 3 years of experience as independent fitter

  3. Certification by American Board for Certification of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics or equivalent

  4. At least 2 years of experience proficiently working with in-patient population.

Role Expectations:

  1. Population is 100% in-patient.

  2. Demonstrates ability to work independently

  3. Demonstrates skill needed to manage more complex cases within inpatient population environment

  4. May supervises Orthotic interns, students and other personnel as needed

  5. Promotes ICARE values and expected behaviors

For Fitter Lead:

  1. Successfully performs all Level 2 requirements and role expectations

  2. Minimum 3 years of experience as independent fitter

3.Certification by American Board for Certification of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics or equivalent

Role Expectations:

  1. Performs work of Orthotics/Prosthetics Fitter as needed.

  2. Organizes, schedules & assigns work of Fitters on a daily basis. Ensures appropriate staffing levels during sick calls & vacation. Manages & monitors meal & rest breaks. May enter, edit, verify & approve time records for each employee.

  3. Makes recommendations in regard to hiring & promotions; gives input regarding staff performance, counsels; develops & implements training activities to ensure high standards of performance.

  4. Orders and schedules devices for approved work; assists in preparing specifications for purchase.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School degree. Ability to interact with patients and physicians on a professional level. Willingness and ability to learn. Associates Degree plus work experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Certification by American Board for Certification of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics preferred.
