Provides technical guidance to a section or unit of laboratory operation involving patient care functions affecting the well-being, comfort and safety of patients between multiple locations within our Mohs surgery department. Works directly with staff and physicians across our Mohs Surgery locations.
Perform histological procedures at one or more Mohs Histology locations within Dermatology. Obtain and properly log in tissue samples for testing. Properly embed and section samples making adjustments as needed for different tissue types. Examine sections of embedded tissue under the microscope to ensure data integrity. Stain and cover slip sample slides for physician analysis. Log patient information into book and computer for data collection.
Ensure that slides are being processed and H+E stain correctly. Review final result before presenting slides to the physician ensuring that the sections are complete and there are no missing epidermis or deep fat as well as no stain problem or freeze artifact. Train new technicians on proper techniques of cutting frozen sections and cryostat safety. Ensure that technicians are current with their Lab Safety Training and procedures. Maintain interpersonal relationship with techs, and address their concerns and questions as needed.
Responsible for ensuring that all cryostats are properly working by performing preventive maintenance. Also ensure that microscopes are working properly and ensure that they are serviced on an annual basis. Account for inventory and order lab supplies for the histology lab and ensure that supplies are readily available.
Perform quality assurance by annually sending slides to pathologist to check on quality of slides to ensure that proper procedures are being performed. Run control slide daily for the H+E stain; check the cryostats and microscopes to make sure they are running correctly. Ensure that patient information matches on map, log book and computer for quality control purpose.
May supervise the Mohs lab(s), maintain licensure of the lab(s), manage NYS audits, and precept newer employees.
Certification in Histotechnology/Medical Technology, must be NYS licensed with any of the following: Certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Certified Clinical Laboratory Technician, or Certified Clinical Laboratory Technician.
