Under direction from the Clinical Microbiology Supervisors and evening shift Assistant Supervisor, develops and administers evening/night shift technical competency. Assists in developing and administering training and education programs in Clinical Laboratory Microbiology to serve the following groups: Medical Technology students during clinical rotations, evening shift technologists/technicians, traveling technologists/technicians.

This position requires performance of all Medical Technologist II duties in Bacteriology including weekend and holiday rotations consistent with other technical staff work schedules.

Beyond mastery of standard laboratory protocols and methods, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theory and technical applications of Clinical Microbiology, demonstrates thorough understanding of the clinical relevance of laboratory tests. Keeps abreast of new developments in his/her areas of specialty and Clinical Microbiology in general.


Under supervision of Clinical Microbiology supervisors with guidance from directors. When performing Medical Technologist duties, reports to the appropriate section Supervisor.


Functions as an assistant supervisor on weekends, holidays and in absence of supervisors.


  • Instrumentation as required for technical functions of Bacteriology

  • Standard office equipment such as telephone, PC, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information Systems (HIS),

  • calculator, copier, fax machine.


  • Evening shift Technologist training (30%)

  • Primary trainer for new evening shift technician/technologists

  • Along with day shift Education Coordinator, ensures that Bacteriology employee training checklists are reflective of current operating procedures

  • Responsible for accurate and complete documentation of training

  • Evening/night shift and competency assessment (5%)

  • May assist in maintaining/updating forms used to record competency

  • Documents direct observation of competency in Bacteriology or other areas with assistance from supervisor and qualified technologists

  • Assures annual adherence to competency needs for evening/night shift Bacteriology are met. May be required to write and grade exams, maintain and distribute specimen unknowns and/or check technologists work for compliance to policies

  • Bench assignment in Bacteriology (60%)

  • Maintains proficiency on Medical Technologist II evening shift benches

  • Participates in weekend and holiday rotations consistent with other technical staff work schedules.

  • Additional duties (5%):

  • May act as a technical consultant to medical personnel and other laboratory staff regarding laboratory procedures and interpretation of technical aspects of tests.

  • Reviews laboratory reports and, using appropriate quality control protocols, makes decisions regarding laboratory results for accuracy, reliability, and clinical validity. Investigates problems/trouble shoots instruments and initiates solutions either independently or in consultation with supervisor, as situation warrants. Keeps supervisor apprised of problems and actions.

  • May assist in reviewing and writing procedure manuals so that they are up-to-date and functional.

  • May participate in developing and evaluating new methods and products. Initiates and maintains written and verbal communication with supervisors and directors regarding progress.

  • May assists in the data collection, preparation and analysis oflaboratory statistics.

  • May participate in interview process for perspective employees

  • May oversee work performance of others in their area of expertise and provide supervision of routine laboratory operations in absence of supervisor, especially on weekends and reduced service shifts. Provides input for coworkers Performance Evaluations.

  • Bachelor's degree in related science and 6 years clinical experience or Master's degree in related science and 3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • New York State Licensed Medical Technologist. MT certification preferred (ASCP or NCA)
