Performs a diversity of technical assignments which are broadly outlined, require some theoretical insight and occasionally require the interpretation of results. Exercises complex skill and judgment, and knowledge of the principles and methods of a technical field.
Performs skilled chemical and physical analyses such as spectroscopy, radiography, electrophoresis and chromatography.
Performs skilled life science procedures such as the following. May perform histologic procedures such as microscopic staining and histochemical techniques. May handle microbiological and tissue cultures including growth, transfer, separation and analysis for contamination, homogeneity, etc. May inoculate and bleed animals and prepare antisera. May do immunologic testing. May perform seroenzymological assays.
Performs complex procedures on patients such as physiologic testing, ultrasound examination, radiology and the like. Operates complex patient testing and monitoring equipment in support of these and similar procedures.
Performs electron microscopy and photomicrography of relatively simple subjects in accordance with established procedures.
Fabricates experimental or prototype equipment to meet engineering or scientific requirements. Sets up and operates many types of equipment and conducts engineering, physical and other tests.
Performs developmental research assignments or special projects requiring some theoretical insight where work is individually assigned and limited in scope. Compiles, computes and assists with a variety of scientific and engineering test data, schematics, specifications, designs, etc., or makes recommendations regarding them. Abstracts pertinent information from technical literature. May perform computer programming for data acquisition and reduction.
Performs other related tasks. For example, may: provide some administrative assistance; perform some drafting; performs specific studies; request and handle supplies and equipment; operate computer entry terminals.
Involved in patient care functions affecting the well being, comfort and safety of patients. May communicate with medical staff in regard to studies being performed on individual patients.
Contributes to keeping the laboratory orderly and clean to assure a safe work environment and the highest quality of work performance.
A 4 year college education which included Laboratory Sciences and technical training closely related to this position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required; or a 2 year college education leading to an Associate degree in Laboratory Sciences and/or related technical subjects and 2 years of directly related experience.
