Full Time 40 hours Grade 097 Flow/Bone Marrow Lab
8 AM-4:30 PM; ROT WKENDS/HOL
Under direction of the laboratory section Supervisor(s)/Director and with the ability to work independently, provides specialized testing and support for the laboratory section. Participates in development and implementation of new procedures in the Flow Lab. Oversees and actively participates in training for new staff and non-staff members (i.e. residents, fellows or others). Provides written reviews upon completion of training for new staff on all aspects of training. Follows, sets up and monitors ongoing Quality Control/ Quality Assurance programs together with Supervisor/Director. With Supervisor/Director, develops and maintains procedure manual and manages inventory of supplies.
Processes bone marrow, blood, tissues, fluids etc. for flow cytometric analysis. Assists in preparation of bone marrow and/or peripheral blood specimens for pathologist/physician review; this may also include assistance at the patient bedside and/or clinical contact with patients (40%)
Communicates to Supervisor/Director on issues concerning sample integrity, labeling, processing problems and policies.
Participates in designated supervisory responsibilities within the laboratory.
Trains new staff in all aspects of flow cytometry including, but not limited to, quality control, general operation, re-analysis, troubleshooting and maintenance.
Performs development and evaluation of new methods, products, and instrumentation.
Performs the duties of a Clinical Technologist IV.
Keeps current on all aspects of flow cytometry such as regulations from NYS and CAP and in conjunction with the Supervisor, prepares for inspections and helps co-ordinate sample processing for proficiency testing.
Maintains records for Quality Control, patient list mode files and paper files.
Provides input into performance appraisals for technologists performing flow cytometry.
Monitors routine supplies and submits orders in a timely fashion to secretary.
Other responsibilities and projects as assigned.
MS in related field with 3 years of relevant laboratory experience, OR BS in Medical Technology or related field and 2-3 years of relevant experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as recognized by New York State as a Medical Technologist. MT(ASCP) or comparable certification desired. Must be NYS Licensed or NYS License eligible.
