Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The Lead UI/UX Designer for the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) executes and informs the conceptual and stylistic direction of public-facing web sites, mobile applications (apps) and other digital experience projects. A unified visual and functional approach, led by the Lead UI/UX Designer, provides users with a superb digital experience regardless of their point of entry. The Lead UI/UX Designer has successful experience working across departments with other designers, content specialists, application developers, marketing managers, and Web developers. Working within a team, the Lead UI/UX Designer recommends enterprise-wide solutions and strategies, leads approaches to Information Architecture (IA) and User Interface/Experience (UI/UX) design. The Lead UI/UX Designer is hands-on, proactive, possesses a passion for technology, and a strong desire to create digital experiences that users find functional and enjoyable.
Responsibilities:
Leads and manages comprehensive approaches to cross-platform design projects that emphasizes visual content, UI/UX, information architecture and branding:
Leads all aspects of the user experience (UX) design process including user research, information architecture, creating wireframes, mockups and interactive prototypes, soliciting and analyzing feedback, user testing, communicating design to developers and stakeholders, and conducting design reviews
Visually captures or represents user research artifacts (stakeholder maps, decision and information needs, roadmaps, domain workflows, etc.) to further critical thinking and communication both internally and externally
Facilitates brainstorming and/or design sessions
Leads projects collaboratively that align missions/goals of Marketing, Advancement, Public Relations, and other internal teams
Works closely with front-end developers and project manager to implement UI solutions and ensure the technology fully executes on the vision and requirements
Translates client needs and business requirements into design direction for large-scale web projects
Understands principles of Information Architecture (IA) and translates wireframes into designs effectively
Effectively communicates conceptual ideas, detailed designs, and design rationale both verbally and visually
Collaborates with web and application developers to create scalable interface designs
Successfully manages projects from conception to execution
Creates and maintains graphic elements within URMC and related:
Develops and continually audits the enterprise style guide (e.g., graphics, page layout, typography, interface design, graphics, etc.)
Maintains overall UI quality and design systems for consistency and ongoing improvement across all web experiences
Drives testing and Quality Assurance (QA) processes to maintain a solid user experience across the site
Demonstrates expert knowledge of UI/UX (user interface/experience) practices and methodologies
Monitors brand usage across multiple platforms
Documentation and Project Management:
Prioritizes tasks to meet project deadlines
Documents all projects in the PM system with sufficient detail and keeps projects up-to-date
Consistently meets project deadlines
Develops qualitative and quantitative measures for user experience and satisfaction
Uses data and research to evaluate the content/design impact, and plans for continuous improvement
Designs for cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility, ensuring ADA compliance, adherence to W3C web design guidelines and Section 508/WAI accessibility issues using an array of tools/languages to create and deploy web sites:
Monitors site for acceptable Accessibility and Usability Standards
Coaches fellow team members on best-practices related to web design and layout
Utilizes Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to work with two-dimensional graphics that support interactivity and animation
Maintains updated knowledge of digital creative standards/technologies and emerging UX tools by attending seminars, classes, and conferences, reviewing current literature
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Engineering, and 4-5 years of related experience, preferably 2-3 years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Web Design or Multimedia Design. 5-7 years related experience in graphic and interactive design or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical Skills:
Detailed experience in standard UX software such as UXPin, Sketch, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, Balsamiq, Adobe XD, or JustInMind.
Detailed working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
Strong working knowledge of front-end Web technologies/programming languages (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XSL, SVG)
Understands custom CSS and how design compositions translate to code
Experience interpreting third-party software reports and making recommends to comply with accessibility requirements
Experience designing for web sites supported by content management systems
Other skills:
Strong problem-solving skills, which may include creative solutions
Demonstrated leadership through expertise in a user experience subdomain (interaction design, information architecture, etc.), front-end development, or departmental expertise
Advanced knowledge of audience definition, persona development, user research, and user testing
Extensive design experience in responsive web, mobile, voice, and other forms of user experience
Experience organizing and leading user needs research interviews
Experience presenting cohesive user flows, storyboards, and wireframes to stakeholders
Demonstrated interest in continuous improvement of designs, principles of design, technology advancements, and business knowledge
An aptitude for aesthetics, user interface design, and graphics creation to compliment a solid technical background
Excellent interpersonal, service-oriented, analytical and writing skills; excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to work collaboratively with department heads, faculty, staff, and other project leaders in a team-based environment as well as individually
Displays a willingness and flexibility to implement change as trends evolve
Must be a self-starter, motivated to take on new projects and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
Solid organizational and time management skills
Effectively and professionally represents URMC Web Services capabilities at meetings and in all communications

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 65,000 - $135,000 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
