The technician will focus on better understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in rheumatic diseases such as psoriatic arthritis and scleroderma. This position will focus on performing molecular biology and biochemical experiments with mouse and human cells. Commonly utilized experimental techniques will include isolation and culturing of specific cell subsets from collected blood and tissue samples, flow cytometry, RNA and protein extraction, quantitative PCR, Western blots, genotyping, transient transfections, ELISA, RNA interference, immunocytochemistry, light and fluorescence microscopy, and biochemical assays. In addition to performing these assays, this individual will also need to perform data analysis and graphical presentation of results. She/he will also perform human sample processing and help in maintaining our bio-repository. The technician will be under the direct supervision of PIs and other laboratory members to conduct basic and clinical research. They will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance and operation. The technician will work in a collaborative group setting, but will need to perform experiments independently and will be expected to troubleshoot assays whenever required. This job is clinical-oriented at the BSL-II level, thus this individual needs to conduct experiments with a high understanding of biosafety. Occasional late hours may be needed, based on patient sample collection schedule.
Performing complex laboratory research experiments with an emphasis on the above mentioned molecular biology and biochemical techniques, acquiring data, and analyzing experimental results. Will use and maintain laboratory equipment including centrifuges, incubators, tissue culture hoods, gel electrophoresis, PCR machine, and a fluorescence microscope.
Assisting with maintenance of cell culture and applying sterile tissue culture techniques. Aids in tissue/cell processing.
Assisting with the planning and troubleshooting of research experiments.
Record keeping of experimental details and results. Assisting with laboratory compliance on regulations and norms. Maintaining inventory and equipment as needed and directed by laboratory manager.
Associates degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preference will be given to individuals with experience with flow cytometry, sterile cell culture techniques, viral vector work, and protein analysis. They should be willing to receive additional training according to the laboratory’s need. The person also should be a highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills, proactive attitude and good work ethic. The individual must be dependable and should be willing to work in a team setting.
