Laboratory Technician IV, Biochem and Biophysics

GENERAL PURPOSE:

There is a full-time laboratory technician IV available in the Maquat and Sakano Labs to assist in day-to-day operations and perform experiments to study fragile X syndrome, the most common single-gene cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder.

Responsibilities consist of overall lab maintenance, including ordering reagents and supplies; molecular biology experiments, including working with mice, mammalian cell culture, and analyses of proteins by western blotting and RNAs by RT-qPCR; and record keeping.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • After initial guidance, plan, design, and execute experiments that construct and analyze plasmids and, subsequently, propagate them by transformating E. coli using established protocols.

  • After initial guidance, plan, design, and execute experiments to purify and characterize proteins and RNAs from

  • mammalian cells transiently transfected with plasmid DNAs using established protocols.

  • After initial guidance, generate data from experiments by use of appropriate instrumentation and software; use the data to prepare excel files, power point slides, and word documents for review, presentations, and publications; and analyze and evaluate the data.

  • Handling of mice inclusive of weaning, tissue collection, euthanasia, genotyping, etc.

  • Occasionally train and guide others in the lab on lab protocols, equipment usage, and use of software.

  • Assist in generating and maintaining large strain and plasmid collections associated with research projects in the lab.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment items and initiate necessary work orders for repairs. Order routine lab supplies. Maintain lab safety records, perform and document lab safety inspections surveys.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 4-5 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

With a bachelor’s degree in a related field, at least 2 years of related laboratory experience. Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Preferred:

  • BA/BS in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering or a related field.

  • Minimum qualifications as defined above.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel).

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication.

  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
