University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York

The technician will focus on the molecular mechanisms of experimental skin fibrosis and scleroderma pathogenesis, under the direct supervision of the PI and/or Sr. Researchers. This person will conduct basic science and clinical research activities with an emphasis on animal models of fibrogenesis, and processing of human blood and skin samples. This job is clinical-oriented at the BSL-II level, thus this individual needs to perform experiments with a high understanding of biosafety. Occasional late hours may be needed, based on patient sample collection schedule.
Performs and manages moderately complex laboratory animal experiments. Routine tasks will include genotyping, animal handling, injections, and maintenance an animal colony. Will assist with small animal surgical procedures and in vivo imaging.
Plans and performs moderately complex laboratory tests like qPCR, ELISA, Western blot, and biochemical assays. Utilizes laboratory equipment including centrifuges, incubators, tissue culture hoods, and a fluorescence microscope. Separates cells and serum from blood samples. Will assist with maintenance of cultured cells and applying sterile tissue culture techniques.
Extracts data from experiments - requiring some theoretical insight and interpretation. Performs data analysis, and prepares reports. Performs analysis of microscopy, PCR, biochemical assays.
Keeps record of experimental details and results. Maintains compliance with laboratory regulations and norms. Maintains inventory and orders supplies; maintains equipment.
Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field and previous experience with animal work, biochemistry, and/or immunology is preferred. The individual must be dependable and be willing to work in a team setting.
