Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Genomics Research Center (GRC) at the University of Rochester is seeking a highly motivated and organized candidate for technical support in quality control/assessment service line. The ideal candidate should have a solid foundation in molecular biology techniques as well as be able to communicate and work with a diverse research team. Specifically, the applicant will work under supervision of the Director of the GRC and Staff Scientists to provide timely and accurate quality control data of nucleic acid (RNA and DNA) and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) libraries, extractions of nucleic acid from diverse sample types, and routine lab maintenance procedures. Work semi-independently using techniques in molecular biology, including isolation of DNA and RNA from human samples, DNA and RNA analysis, PCR, and high-throughput sample quality control processing. Experience with Windows and MacIntosh-based programs for spreadsheets, word processing and graphics is required. Good organizational skills and communication is required

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Essential

E1. Process RNA, cDNA, and DNA samples through quality control workflows, including data analysis and result interpretation. (30%)

E2. Perform nucleic acid extraction/purification, including RNA and DNA. (25%)

E3. Act as a sample submission liaison, including sample retrieval and return. (25%)

E4. Work with GRC Lab Manager to maintain GRC inventory and ensure lab cleanliness standards. (10%)

E5. Set up and maintain shared instrumentation. (5%)

E6. Participate in lab meetings, meetings with supervisors, and attend educational seminars. (5%)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelors’ degree in molecular biology or equivalent discipline strongly preferred.

  • Experience with DNA and RNA molecular biology techniques is required.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
