Responsibilities

The Animal Resource office within the Vivarium serves as the centralized location for all 3,000-animal research faculty & staff, Vivarium animal care and veterinary staff to interface for managing the day-to-day operation of the University’s animal research and teaching program.

The Animal Resource Core’s success depends upon exemplary customer service with a new, expanding need to meeting compliance requirements of UCAR, Environmental Health & Safety and the Institutional Biosafety Committee.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES

  • Collect census animal room data, create new cage cards, enter cost accounting data. Responsible for census management, including collecting barcodes; entering barcode and scanning room data; entering data into Oracle database of Vivarium and DCM research account charges; create new cage cards and ensure proper documentation on cages.35%

  • Direct rodent colony management practices for researchers at least twice per week. Identify and employ appropriate breeding schemes to optimize progeny based on strain complexity, scientific need and strain based reproductive capabilities. Accurately sex neonatal rodents and weanlings. Wean rodents at appropriate interval based on age, size and following IACUC policies. Individually identify rodents using IACUC approved methods including toe snip, ear punch, ear tags and tattoo. Obtain tissue samples for genetic characterization of mice and rats by performing tail biopsies, ear biopsies and blood collection. Organize detailed breeding records and general inventories of genetically altered rodent colonies using DCM databases. Troubleshoot breeding insufficiencies in consultation with the researcher, supervisor and DCM Veterinarians. 30%

  • General office duties, including representing the office to provide excellent customer service, answering phones, filing, word processing, maintaining and tracking data in spreadsheets. Provide back-up duties for the Animal Resource Secretary including answering questions, processing requests from and scheduling training for research faculty and staff; animal care, veterinary and facilities department staff coming in on six departmental phone lines as well as “walk-in” traffic to the office. 25%

  • Independently oversee the Animal Resource’s Hazard Communication and Room Audit Program for research animals dosed with and staff exposed to biohazards and chemical hazards. Plan and perform a variety of tests, analyses and observations. Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and make simple repairs. Extract and interpret data and prepare summary reports. Monitor Principal Investigator (PI) documentation. 5%

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least 6 years of Animal Care experience and LAT certification by AALAS preferred.

  • Experience working with spreadsheets and databases preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and processes.
