Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Embryology Laboratory Assistant position is an entry level position potentially leading to promotion into the position of a Junior Embryologist. This position will function as a support for the Embryology laboratory in term of paperwork and cryopreservation shipping and handling. This position allows a recent college graduate to be exposed to the job of Embryologist and to assess whether this job would be a satisfactory fit for their personality and possible skill development.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preparation of paperwork for egg retrievals and embryo transfers: Reviews patient records (including infectious disease testing results and Summary of Records for donor cycles), physician notes in Epic, and all previous cycles to determine whether an accurate Request for Service (RFS) is available prior to a procedure; whether all consents have been signed, scanned, and are viewable with the Electronic Medical Record (EMR); and whether the Request for Service is supported by completed consents. If the RFS and consents do not match, the Embryology Lab Assistant will contact the appropriate personnel in the clinic to establish what procedures are needed and to correct the RFS prior to the day of egg retrieval or embryo transfer.

  • SART data entry: Enters all cycle specifics, including demographics (corrected if needed), ovarian stimulation and embryology data, cryopreservation data, and cycle outcome information into the SART tracking system. Cycles must be entered prospectively and then completed following delivery. This position will require follow up with clinicians and patients to track deliveries and pregnancy outcomes.

  • Cryopreservation: Records and tracks all cryopreservation, warming, and transfer procedures, ensuring all cryo logs and records are up-to-date. Maintains the cryo tanks, including tank measurements, tank refilling, alarm testing, and alarm responses.

  • Cryoshipping: Organizes shipments of eggs, sperm, and embryos to long-term storage, including compiling all the paperwork, consents, infectious disease records, and inventory updates. Organizes all requests for shipping from long-term storage to the clinic in order to ensure receipt of eggs, sperm, or embryos in a timely manner prior to warming and/or transfer. Maintains accurate records of all cryo inventory changes. Responsible for shipping and receiving patient samples from outside banks or other IVF programs as well.

  • Quality Control (QC): Performs QC assessments as needed and directed by the Embryologists. QC includes recording daily values from all incubators, heated devices, pH, gas levels, room air quality, etc.

  • Media/dish preparation for any procedure required in the Embryology laboratory. Sterile technique and careful attention to details, such as names, date of birth, and all labeling is a necessity.

  • This position is hourly and reports directly to the Embryology Supervisor and the IVF Laboratory Director.
