Lab Clinical Support Tech IV, Senior Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the designated Supervisor, the Senior Technician oversees and coordinates the flow of specimens and directs staff in order to ensure accurate and timely reporting of results. Exercises advanced knowledge, judgment and problem-solving skills. Provides technical supervision of lab section and is accountable for directing the professional conduct and technical performance of personnel on that shift. Serves as the shift lead in the absence of the Supervisor or Operations Coordinator.

Under supervision of the Specimen Management/Microbiology Receiving Supervisor. Takes direction from the Operations Coordinator in the absence of the section Supervisor.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Standard office equipment such as multi-feature ACD telephone, PC, copier, printer, scanner, fax machine, and the like. Software systems such as Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), and related software applications. Laboratory equipment may include operations of pneumatic tube system, centrifuge, automated pipette system, blood culture system, biosafety cabinet, scanner, cassette maker, and pre analytical laboratory automation system as applicable per laboratory section.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Operational: (25%)
Oversees department specific functions to ensure operations are running at an optimal level. Maintains efficient operations to ensure prompt specimen handling and department turn- around times are met.
Accountable for shift clean up. Monitors daily check lists for completion of all pending tasks.
Coordinates and communicates information between designated shifts and with Senior Techs, Supervisors and staff.
- Technical: (25%)
Performs trouble shooting as needed. Follows up with written documentation when necessary and makes suggestions for corrective action to department Supervisor or Operations Coordinator.
Responsible for defining priorities during extraordinary situations (i.e. sick calls, scheduled and unscheduled down time, emergency “disaster” situations).
Assists technologists in the pre-analytical processing of clinical trial study specimens.
- Personnel: (30%)
Coordinates staffing schedules for department specific assignments to meet demands of priority processing in order to meet required TAT’s. Coordinates lunches and breaks so that workflow is not compromised. Documents unscheduled absences in exception log and assignment schedule, and updates assignment schedule to reflect unscheduled absences.
Monitors employee’s daily performance and holds staff accountable for the accurate and timely completion of assigned activities. Directs staff as needed to adjust to job activities and work volume.
Mentors staff and participates in employee evaluations and staff competency. Mediates and diffuses any personnel conflicts in real time, and promptly discusses any personnel issues with the appropriate Supervisor.
Promotes a positive employee engagement environment. Proactively participates in regular feedback, communicating concerns, and supporting the implementation of improvement initiatives.
- Departmental: (20%)
Communicates policies and procedures, including safety, security and customer service protocols, and monitors staff compliance.
Participates in QA initiatives and data collection for required monitors. Works with Supervisory team to develop and maintain pre-analytical monitors. Assists in the development and review of requisitions. Makes suggestions to improve requisitions based on customer and laboratory staff feedback.
Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Supervisor. Works with Supervisory team and laboratory staff to plan for and accomplish departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
Continuously assesses work processes and makes suggestions to the Supervisor for improved work methods and opportunities for increased efficiency, cost reduction, and operational problem resolution.

QUALIFICATIONS :
Associate’s degree or some college level course work in science or a related discipline and two years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience or certification. Customer service experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 20.07 - $ 27.09 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
