Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities

Installs, tests and repairs electric light and power distribution circuits and networks. Maintains both high and low voltage power systems, including control systems and communication systems, working from electrical layouts and wiring diagrams. Performs work in compliance with all applicable codes and standards. Uses voltage-ohm meters, circuit testers, electrical lineman's hand tools, mechanic's hand tools, bench lathe, ammeter, test lamps, growler, precision electrical and mechanical gauges. Inspects and tests and maintains electrical lighting, signal, communication and power distribution circuits and equipment. Isolates equipment and component failures in switches, motors, control panels and a variety of electrical equipment, using electrical test equipment. Performs layout work for electrical maintenance and construction operations. Installs new panel boxes, circuits and feeder lines to meet load conditions. Performs necessary electrical maintenance work on elevators, hoists, conveyors, electric motors and lighting systems. Performs complex wiring, installation and trouble shooting on motors, generators, switches, transformers, electric clocks and time systems, intercom systems, paging systems, fuse panels, alarm and signal systems, heating appliances, electric ovens, and similar kinds of specialized electrical devices. Replaces or exchanges defective mechanical components such as small motor gears and bearings and electrical parts such as brushes, armatures, resistors, switches, transformers, etc., according to electrical and mechanical schematic diagrams. Performs basic and routine level work commonly assigned to other trades, (e.g., carpentry or mechanical tasks) where performance of such tasks is incidental to performance of the electrical work or is required in response to an emergency situation. Pulls and installs cable, including underground cable. Installs transformer, disconnects switches, buss structures and fuses. Installs and maintains control lighting for orchestra and opera productions, if applicable. Works from blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams and from verbal instructions. Performs other related duties requiring comparable level of knowledge, skill and responsibility, as requested.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent educational training. Ability to speak and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication. Ability to make mathematical calculations, understand and use blueprints, wiring diagrams and electrical schematics. Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations. Completion of approved apprenticeship program in the Electrical Trade or equivalent combination of formal training and experience. Experience should total a minimum of 5-6 years including apprenticeship time. Required to use, wear and utilize safety equipment specified or provided by the University in the manner prescribed. Required to observe and follow safe work practices at all times as specified by OSHA or other regulations. Depending upon functional area, may require a valid motor vehicle operator's license and the ability to operate vehicles in a trouble-free, safe and skillful manner. Willingness to work long and irregular hours when assigned. Must have working telephone so Electrician can be reached at irregular hours for call-in duty. Must keep current phone number and address on file with Trade Supervisor and Department office. Knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations. Completion of approved apprenticeship program in the Electrical Trade or equivalent combination of formal training and experience.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 27.27 - $ 35.03 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the first and last step pay rates for this job, as set forth in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Individual pay will be set in accordance with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
