Provides leadership, direction and counsel on processes, procedures and policies related to all workers’ compensation (WC) claims for the University. Provides and maintains policies and procedures.
Investigates, monitors and serves as a resource in determining compensability of workers’ compensation claims. Oversees staff and vendors handling of notification and reporting processes related to notices of work-related injury and/or illness. Ensures processes are compliant and followed within the regulated timeframes. Serves as a representative of the University for all hearings.
Directs appropriate action to speed resolution of claims and expedite injured worker’s return to work or settlements. Collaborates with the Return to Work team, medical case managers, treating professionals, rehabilitation specialists and third party administrator to facilitate the employee’s return to work.
Advises employees on claims process and University policy. Directs the effort of the third party administrator to ensure WC claims are managed appropriately. Prepares and makes presentations on the University’s WC program to departments upon request. Identifies vendors to support WC program, including law firms, vocational nurse services, surveillance investigators, IME vendors, etc. Determines terms and costs of contracts and holds vendors accountable to services and pricing.
Directs the work of staff to design, develop and analyze reports to communicate injury data to Deans, Directors, Chairs and Financial managers on a quarterly, annual and special request basis. Designs confidential monthly WC narrative for CFO, budget office and other leaders. Collaborates with Return to Work team to develop claim strategies. Oversees WC budget, makes projections on cost/spending for budget proposals, analyzes trends and builds strategies to mitigate costs.
Collaborates with University departments to develop accident reduction programs. Represents the University within the community, boards and government offices.
Recommends changes to policy. Keeps abreast of regulatory requirements and educates WC team and the University community on regulatory or programmatic changes.
