The Family Based Treatment Counselor (FBTC) will function as the primary clinician responsible for assessment, treatment planning, therapy/counseling, and community referrals for patients and families. This position requires a high degree of independent judgement and knowledge of treatment/intervention goals and barriers for the project in order to balance, navigate, and collaborate with multiple partners and competing priorities in a manner that ensures the successful completion of the project within the defined timeframe. The Family Based Treatment Counselor will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator and provide study coordination services for sponsor/government funded research focusing on children and parents with Obesity. Maintain continuous relations with study team and principal investigator.
The position will be expected, as studies warrant, to interface with multiple sites for multi-center sponsored studies including participation in extensive in-person and remote Family Based Treatment training at the initiation of this role (approximately 65 hours) and in weekly cross-site clinical supervision meetings led by the Clinical Psychologist and the training core team (Principal Investigator, Washington University) at Washington in the first 6 to 12 months. Demonstrate ability to develop and maintain good clinical practice, division goals and objectives and utilize expert skill and knowledge to deliver safe and thorough research subject care. Clinical Intervention Delivery (65%)
Provides Family Based Treatment (FBT) to assigned families, including evaluation, tracking, individual and family treatment.
Independently plans, coordinates, implements and reviews individualized family treatment sessions for family-based weight management program utilizing behavioral modification skills, family therapy techniques, and social facilitation in primary care practices as part of a multi-site large federally funded research study.
Ensures the development and implementation of comprehensive and individualized treatment plans for patients with clearly defined goals; conducts evidence informed treatment with patients.
Continually assess the patient’s behavioral condition and progress in coordination with the family, the PI and the primary care provider.
Documents treatment in subjects study file, and when/where appropriate.
Participates collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team to provide coordinated treatment.
Collaborates with referral sources and other professions both internal and external throughout study care activities.
Assesses successful completion of therapeutic goals and plans progression and termination of intervention accordingly. Coordinates with Primary Care Physician to ensure continuity of care.
Establishes and regularly maintains cooperative working relationships with community providers and practice staff, as well as administrative staff of the Medical Center and University.
Maintains professional CEU requirements by reading, attending seminars, workshops and conferences for behavioral and lifestyle management or treatment of obesity for children or adults.
Maintains a knowledge of, and follows, relevant Behavioral/Mental Health or Family Based Treatment Services policies and procedures, as well as those delineated by therapy team.
The FBTC will use their judgement and decision making to support families enrolled in the study achieve individualized treatment goals.
Work on an independent level making primary decisions related to treatment/research specific implementation.
In addition to previously listed clinical intervention delivery, conduct screening interviews, pre-treatment assessments, and follow-up assessments throughout the duration of the program. Interventionist will have primary contact with participants during the assessment phases and will direct completion of these assessments independently at the pediatric practice sites.
In collaboration with participating pediatric practice staff, develop recruitment strategies appropriate for each individual pediatric setting (with strategic thought given to sensitive nature of research), assist with continuous recruitment of program participants and retains appropriate participants.
With broad latitude for autonomy and independent judgment, the FBTC is responsible for implementation of study interventions, treatments, and protocols, identifying and consenting research subjects, acting as resource for research subjects and their families.
Work collaboratively in the development of research protocols and consents.
Obtain informed consent and explain diagnostic procedures and treatment plans to participants/families.
Ensure timely and accurate completion of study documents (Informed Consent, Treatment Plan Forms, study specific databases) required by study sponsor and regulatory bodies.
Provides direct management and day-to-day care to subjects per sponsor Protocol guidelines and good standard of care guidelines.
Identify actual or potential study issues, develop problem solutions, and reformulate study goals on an as need basis.
Compile study data and provide weekly status reports on family’s progress.
Data Collection & Compliance (5%)
Completes assessment procedures, and engages in accurate data collection at the Rochester clinical treatment and research site.
Collects data under clinical research protocols in accordance with HIPPA and other human subjects regulations
Maintain data collection, entry, documentation, and reporting through use of RedCap and/or other approved software for the study
Ensure compliance with acceptable regulatory requirements and IRB/WIRB standards. Ensure integrity of all study data collected. Ensure protocol activities are administered consistently across all families.
Bachelor's degree with major course work in an appropriate health, social or technical field and 2-3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree (MA; MS; MSW, etc. in a related field of study such as dietetics, social work, counseling, human development, exercise/wellness, applied behavior analysis or clinical psychology is preferred. Interventionist will have masters-level clinical treatment knowledge or experience or some combination of both. At least one year of experience delivering evidence-based behavioral treatment(s) to youth, adults, and/or families is preferred. Experience working with diverse clinical populations as well as specific experience with families and children desired. A high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with a variety of individuals must be demonstrated. An ability to make clinical decisions independently with the ability to use weekly clinical supervision appropriately is essential. Familiarity working on an interdisciplinary team preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. An ability to organize and present data in a concise and easily understood manner is imperative. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Problem Solving Therapy (PST), and/or Interpersonal Therapy (IT) training and experience is highly desirable.
Working knowledge of techniques and methodologies used in developing, coordinating, and managing clinical treatment programs. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). A working knowledge of database management and spreadsheet software preferred. Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and capable of handling multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Must have reliable/efficient transportation. Local, regional and national travel required to fulfill study protocols and training.

Training/ Certification Expectations
This position requires an annual re-certification in HIPAA awareness and annual renewal of a Strong Commitment contract. Must maintain CITI certification. Must complete mandated reporting certification. There is an expectation of study specific in-person training at least annually (held at one of the four clinical research sites nationally).
