Position Summary:

Plan, implement, coordinate, administer and evaluate the care for patients enrolled in our cancer control protocols and exercise programs. Provide professional direction with the planning, implementation, coordination, operation and evaluation of the oncology projects in the Unit. Maintain a working knowledge of the areas of expertise by reviewing research literature and abstracts, attending pertinent local and national meetings and seminars. Maintain current certifications with the American College of Sports Medicine for exercise testing and prescription at the level of Certified Exercise Physiologist or Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist. ACE or AF AA group exercise instructor preferred. Personal trainer certification preferred. CPR/ AED required.


Under general guidance and with latitude for exercise of independent judgment, coordinates patient enrollment, schedules and care in University of Rochester clinical trials and evidence based exercise program. Monitor conduct of studies assuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Performs comprehensive exercise assessment according to ACSM guidelines (e.g., maximal and submaximal VO2 testing, gait analysis, Biodex isokinetic, isometric, and isotonic strength testing, EMG measurement, body composition analyses including bioelectrical impedance and skinfolds, flexibility testing including goniometry, actigraphy, heart rate variability, and other tests as needed for exercise program). Use technology such as activity trackers and fitness apps. Oversees, design, and delivers exercise interventions for cancer patients. Collects, processes, stores and analyses human biological samples for protocols ( e.g., blood, saliva, sweat, spit).

  • Serves as liaison between staff, physicians, patients and their families. Plan and execute required aspects of the research project and evidence based exercise program for cancer patients working with the PI, Laboratory staff, the Clinical Trials Office, the Research Subjects Review Board (RSRB), physicians and other health care professionals which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as the patient representative during development of studies and projects

  • Screen and identify potential study patients by participating in multidisciplinary clinics and reviewing clinic schedules and consult materials

  • Maintain patient data such as consent forms, letters, and appointment notices. Provide scheduling of study events for patients enrolled.

  • Collect clinical data during all phases of care while patient is on-study, complete case report forms. Submit specialized data including treatment plans and films

  • Maintain and report patient data for statistical analysis.

  • Assist with study audits conducted by independent monitors and federal and governmental agencies.

  • Assist with data analysis for long-term projects.

  • Monitor studies regularly for conformity with Unit, Cancer Center, Medical Center and CTO (Clinical Trials Office) standard operating procedures, and verify data ensuring compliance with requirements of the protocol and federal regulations.

  • Facilitate assigned studies and projects.

  • Maintain records and correspondence with a variety of agencies and officials (such as outside physicians, medical centers, and nursing homes, the New York State Bureau of vital Statistics) that provide a source of information.

  • Serve as liaison for other groups at SMH whose patients are enrolled in studies, and coordinate data submission for enrolled patients

  • Process referrals

  • Screen and schedule patients

  • Provide comprehensive exercise evaluation

  • Create assessment reports and document in medical record

  • Design and administer evidence based exercise plans

  • Supervise exercise programming; individual and group training

  • Maintain and report patient data

  • Serve as liaison for other groups at SMH; Integrative Oncology, Cancer Control, PEAK Lab

  • Serve as point of contact for patients concerning exercise program within the University and affiliates. Prepare detailed documentation of treatment and follow-up of enrolled patients. Coordinate appointments and correspondence with all patients participating in studies and program. Collaborate with personnel in other departments and facilities to implement patient activities.

  • Complete and submit proper documentation kept on file in the PEAK Lab. Provide ongoing education and information regarding current research. Participate in Departmental Grand Rounds and continuing education.

  • Maintain an active dialogue with affiliate institutions outside the University of Rochester, conducts training sessions for new staff, assist faculty and staff in preparing and conducting presentations at national group meetings, and assist in the conduct of site visits on the national level.

  • Prepare, collate, and submit in a timely manner, patient information, status reports and updates as necessary for reporting on progress of patients enrolled in program. Update and maintain database of all patients enrolled in program to facilitate the preparation of these reports.


    Bachelor's degree in kinesiology or exercise science is required, Master's degree is preferred. American College of Sports Medicine certification at the level ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist or ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist is required. ACSM Cancer Exercise Trainer is preferred and the successful candidate will be required to obtain the cancer specialization within 6 months of being hired. ACE or AF AA group exercise instructor and personal trainer certification preferred. CPR/ AED required. Certified yoga instructor preferred. One to three years of exercise assessment and leadership related experience. Excellent verbal and writing skills are required. Knowledge of computer databases, word processing, spreadsheets and graphics packages are important. A dynamic individual with great people skills is a must!
