Responsibilities
Overview
The Division of Clinical Genetics at the University of Rochester Medical Center is seeking a full-time Genetic Counselor Assistant to join our team at Golisano Children’s Hospital. The University of Rochester is a major genetics service provider in upstate New York with highly successful genetics programs in pediatrics, adult medicine, neurogenetics, ocular genetics and prenatal/reproductive genetics. Our current clinical programs include Inborn Metabolic Disorders, General Pediatric and Adult Genetics clinics, in-patient consultation service and the collaborative multidisciplinary Craniofacial Team Clinic. We are in a major growth phase and increasing our programs to include multiple disciplines.
With general oversight, the position directly supports the work of the Genetic Counselors. Candidate will use eRecord and perform other duties as assigned. Candidate must demonstrate capability and desire to work independently and be a strong team player. Demonstrates ICARE* values in each of the major responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Clinical Support
Case preparation, attaining family history and medical records prior to genetic appointments
help facilitate genetic testing and track clinical test results
write letters of medical necessity and complete other paperwork/documentation/calls for health insurance coverage of genetic testing
completing test requisition forms and assisting with the coordinating genetic testing
packaging/sending out genetic testing blood kits, managing genetic test kit inventory
assist in the maintenance of the genetic testing databases
Administrative Support
answer phone calls, assist patients in scheduling appointments, administer patient intake forms, etc.
Provide cross coverage for Physician Support Specialists when necessary.
Attends Division Meetings and other relevant meetings, as requested.
Provides clerical assistance, including distributing mail, create routine & non-routine mail correspondence to families & outside offices, scanning, faxing and errands.
Other duties, as assigned.
Provider Support & External Coordination
Assists Providers in patient care transfer to external offices & departments.
Provides & requests all necessary medical documents & records to & from external offices and patients as needed.
Assists families with coordinating multi divisional appointments internal & external.
Reviews incoming patient visit referrals for proper scheduling and distribution.
Assists Providers with contacting families to provide test results.
Examines the clinical schedule(s) on a continuous basis to identify opportunities for optimizing the time and effort of providers.
Researches hospital medical records for information requested by physicians, insurance companies, & families.
Misc.
Provides insurance companies with information needed for services, testing, & labs.
Obtain & place orders from families for specialty foods items for patients on low protein diets.
Assembles PKU kits for lab testing.
Requirements
High School diploma required. Bachelor’s degree preferred in biology, genetics, psychology, chemistry, medical technology or other health sciences related field.
2.5 years related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Demonstrated customer service skills, specifically strong oral and written communication skills, are essential. Knowledge of eRecord and Microsoft Office programs are desired. For qualified candidates, training will be provided. Candidate must demonstrate accuracy in all correspondence including eRecord. Candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, demonstrate efficiency in prioritizing assignments, and be able to multi-task. Candidate should be skilled in proactively resolving problems and recommending and implementing continuous quality improvement. Candidate must be flexible with work schedule.

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 18.50 - $ 24.05 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
