Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY:

Serves as an Exercise Physiologist and coordinates study projects for oncology clinical trials conducted in the University of Rochester, Department of Surgery, Division of Supportive Care in Cancer, PEAK Human Performance Clinical Research Laboratory

SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general guidance and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, coordinate patient enrollment, schedules, and care in University of Rochester clinical trials and evidence-based exercise program. Monitors conduct of studies assuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Performs comprehensive exercise assessment according to American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines (e.g., maximal and submaximal VO2 testing, gait analysis, Biodex isokinetic, isometric, and isotonic strength testing, EMG measurement, body composition analyses including bioelectrical impedance and skinfolds, flexibility testing including goniometry, actigraphy, heart rate variability, and other tests as needed for the exercise program). Uses technology such as activity trackers, fitness apps, online platforms to perform data collection, intervention delivery, and remote testing. Oversees, designs, and delivers exercise interventions for patients and survivors with cancer and their caregivers. Collect, process, store, and analyze human biological samples for study protocols (e.g., blood, saliva, sweat, spit).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Plans, implements, coordinates, administers and evaluates the care for patients enrolled in our cancer control and supportive care clinical trials and exercise programs. Provides professional direction with the planning, implementation, coordination, operation, and evaluation of the oncology clinical trials. Maintains a working knowledge of the areas of expertise by reviewing research literature and abstracts, attending pertinent local and national meetings and seminars. Maintains current certifications with the ACSM for exercise testing and prescription at the level of Certified Exercise Physiologist or Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

  • Serves as liaison between staff, physicians, patients, and their families. Plans and execute required aspects of the research project and evidence-based exercise program for patients and survivors with cancer, working with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the research team, laboratory staff, the Clinical Trials Office, the Research Subjects Review Board (RSRB), physicians, and other health care professionals which may include, but are not limited to, the following: (60%)

  • Serves as the patient representative during the development of studies and projects

  • Screens and identifes potential study patients by participating in multidisciplinary clinics and reviewing clinic schedules and consult materials

  • Maintains patient data such as consent forms, letters, and appointment notices. Provides scheduling of study events for patients enrolled in studies.

  • Collects clinical data during all phases of care while the patient is on-study, complete case report forms. Submits specialized data including treatment plans, forms, and recordings.

  • Maintains and reports patient data for statistical analysis.

  • Supports study audits conducted by independent monitors and federal and governmental agencies.

  • Supports data management and analysis for long-term projects.

  • Monitors studies regularly for conformity with the Division, the Department, Cancer Center, Medical Center, and CTO (Clinical Trials Office) standard operating procedures, and verify data ensuring compliance with requirements of the protocol and federal regulations.

  • Facilitates assigned studies and projects.

  • Maintains records and correspondence with a variety of agencies and officials (such as outside physicians, medical centers, and nursing homes, the New York State Bureau of Vital Statistics) that provide a source of information.

  • Serves as liaison for other groups at Medical Center whose patients are enrolled in studies, and coordinate data submission for enrolled patients

  • Processes referrals

  • Screensvand schedules patients

  • Provides comprehensive exercise evaluation, functional and fitness testing

  • Creates assessment reports and document in the medical record

  • Designs and administers evidence-based exercise prescriptions

  • Supervises exercise programming; individual and group training

  • Maintains and report patient data

  • Serves as liaison for other groups at Medical Center, Integrative Oncology, Supportive Care in Cancer Division, PEAK Human Performance Clinical Research Lab

  • Serves as point of contact for patients concerning the exercise program within the University and affiliates. Prepares detailed documentation of treatment and follow-up of enrolled patients. Coordinates appointments and correspondence with all patients participating in studies and programs. Collaborates with personnel in other departments and facilities to implement patient activities. (10%)

  • Completes and submits proper documentation kept on file in the PEAK Human Performance Clinical Research Lab. Provides ongoing education and information regarding current research. Participates in Departmental Grand Rounds and continuing education. (10%)

  • Maintains an active dialogue with affiliate institutions outside the University of Rochester, conduct training sessions for new staff, assist study PIs and the research team in preparing and conducting presentations at national meetings, and assist in the conduct of site visits on the national level. (10%)

  • Prepares, collate, and submit in a timely manner, patient information, status reports, and updates as necessary for reporting on the progress of patients enrolled in the studies and programs. Update and maintain a database of all patients enrolled in the studies and programs to facilitate the preparation of these reports. (10%)

  • Performs other duties as necessary per their supervisors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and/or Kinesiology; and 1-3 years of exercise assessment and leadership-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree in kinesiology or exercise science is preferred.

  • Certification by the American College of Sports Medicine at the level ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist or ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist required;

  • CPR/AED certification is required.

  • ACSM Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer is preferred; cancer specialization required within 6 months of being hired.

  • Yoga instructor certification is preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and writing skills are required.

  • Skills and knowledge of computer databases, MS Office, and graphics packages are important.
