Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides executive leadership, strategic direction and both internal and external interpersonal capital in directing all the Research Subject Review Board (RSRB) policies and guidance related to the review of all University biomedical, social and behavioral research involving human subjects conducted by any faculty member, employee or student. Directly contributes to the advancement of the University of Rochester as a world-class research enterprise by: 1) ensuring an effective compliance function; 2) promoting the program, its services and solutions to the University research community and 3) establishing, managing and leveraging relationships through a national presence.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES :

Under general direction and with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative:

55% Direct RSRB policy and guidance to maintain oversight of the entire review process; as a consultant to the investigator, specialist, board chair, board member and other University offices/departments, making recommendations and suggesting alternatives; assisting in and/or mediating issues resulting from audits.

20% Supervise assigned staff and activities within established University guidelines. Ensures initial training and continued education of assigned staff. Plans and organizes workshops as appropriate.

10% Provide executive direction and oversight to all University research policy and regulatory environment to ensure that the University meets its obligations in the review of all human subjects research by interpreting the federal regulations in a method that is workable and has practical application for abstract and complex ethical, scientific and legal issues.

5% Direct others to develop, monitor, and update all Federalwide Assurance documentation with the Department of Health and Human Services and University's Human Research Protection Accreditation.

5% Applies knowledge to provide recommendations and influence in decisions of funding agencies such as the FDA, NIH, and DHHS on matters related to the University's commitment and application of federal regulations. Organizes and manages the operations of the Office to ensure the timely flow of all materials as required for appropriate documentation and federal audits.

5% Serves as a University liaison and representative with the local community, area hospitals/agencies, and other University on human subjects issues. Represents the University at national meetings through presentation and posters.

REQUIREMENTS :

Master's degree in Biomedical or Social Sciences and 8 years of related research experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as IRB Professional (CIP) desirable.
