Seeking an individual to develop methods for gathering, analyzing and reporting information in support of Admissions and Financial Aid strategic initiatives. The Data Analyst will analyze, interpret and manipulate complex data, prepare reports, and make recommendations that will inform policy. This position will lead research and data analysis and oversee predictive modeling for recruitment, retention, general enrollment reporting, financial aid reporting, and enrollment research policy.

The Data Analyst will provide direction and support in advancing strategic goals through the conduct of research and data collection, establishing and managing data collection processes, gathering data, building reports, and developing and maintaining a system for collecting and communicating data and program results. The incumbent will focus on conducting sophisticated quantitative research, analysis, and predictive modeling. The position includes importing, cleaning, transforming, validating and modeling data with the purpose of understanding and making conclusions from the data for presentation and decision-making purposes in Admissions and Financial Aid in collaboration with the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Director of Financial Aid, and Director of Admissions.

This position reports to the Associate Dean of College Enrollment/Director of Financial Aid and works closely with leaders in Admissions, Financial Aid, Enrollment (AFE). The position will collaborate with University institutional data warehouse and research, the Dean’s office and various academic departments on campus. The successful candidate must have experience working with large and complex data sets and running complex statistical procedures and models. Strong general computer skills and expertise with Microsoft Excel is essential, along with experience using predictive analytics and data visualization software, such as Mathematica, R, Tableau, etc.

The successful candidate must demonstrate superior communication skills and judgment as well as management and leadership skills. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills in a diverse environment are essential, as is a professional and resourceful approach. Must possess demonstrated customer service experience that incorporates a global perspective, along with a commitment to diversity and the ability to work in a team setting with all levels of management, faculty, and staff.


Research and Statistical Modeling

  • Develop protocols and methods for gathering information and conducting annual research for pre-college, recruiting, admissions review, enrollment, financial aid, and veteran’s programs.

  • In consultation with the Associate Dean of College Enrollment/Director of Financial Aid, evaluate and develop predictive modeling anticipating likely enrollment choices and cyclical prospect, applicant, and admitted student behavior.

  • Develop procedures for modeling, identify data requirements, and evaluate existing procedures and models to recommend adjustments for multiple models designed to address intermediate outcomes, to inform the strategic design, goal-setting and program choices of Deans and Directors.

  • Analyze, interpret and evaluate numerous strategic and targeted recruitment programs and activities as conceived and operated by various professional staff in College Admissions and Financial Aid. Provide critical feedback as part of comprehensive program review for all major programs annually.

  • Evaluate project prospects for success with new and changing programs and outreach activities, in coordination with the College Enrollment, Admissions, and Financial Aid project development process.

Reporting and Compliance

  • Develop programming and standard reporting protocols for admissions and financial aid, which include financial compliance reports, application data, student inquiry and prospect data, admission decisions, enrollment trends, etc.

  • Direct the activities of AFE staff in the conduct of gathering, compiling and analyzing information that leads to the development, implementation, maintenance and circulation of data dashboards and other user-friendly presentation ready format for enrollment leaders and stakeholders designed to promote evidence-based decision-making for senior leadership and external constituents.

  • Gather, analyze, and interpret data required for reporting activities.

  • Manage the completion of a broad spectrum of required federal, state, and private surveys and reports for final review and approval by Deans and Directors.

  • Reviews annual reporting requirements, identify changes, and update internally generated reports and procedures; access a variety of secure national and institutional databases to collect data and generate reports.

  • Coordinate activities with other departments on campus, including the Eastman School of Music and the School of Medicine to ensure accurate and timely collection of data to incorporate into University-wide reporting when appropriate.

  • In collaboration with the Provost’s office, individual schools, and other staff, assemble admissions and financial aid information necessary for reports and surveys submitted through other offices.

  • Develop an annual calendar of internal reports designed to address real-time information requests from the President, Provosts, Deans, and Directors.

  • Provide ad hoc reports as directed by Dean and Directors in response to new initiatives and audits.

  • External reporting activities include, but are not limited to: FISAP, NYSED, HEOP, COFHE, Common Data Set, NCAA, IPEDS, IRS, NPSAS, and a variety of media surveys.

Data Quality Assurance and Management

  • With direction from the Associate Dean of College Enrollment/Director of Financial Aid, work in close coordination with members of the Systems and Operations Team and the Assistant Director for Market Research to ensure that all processes lead to accurate and timely data collection for successful incorporation into modeling and analysis.

  • Through procedures, training, quality control and testing, ensure highest-quality supervision throughout the cyclical collection of admissions and financial aid data used for reporting, program management and supporting strategic enrollment decisions. Certify the accuracy of data routinely and as required.

  • Consult frequently with Project Managers and Analyst Programmers to ensure best practices as they manage student records for mailing, outreach, and reporting projects.

  • Identify and develop database management and other information technology tools, including software, to support statistical data interpretation and reporting. Recommend new purchases and services as required to support state-of-the-art data control and reporting.

General Duties

  • Continued growth and development in the field of enrollment management through attendance at conferences, workshops, (etc.) as a participant, panelist, presenter, or moderator as needed for the purpose of determining and implementing best practices, remaining current in the field and incorporating this knowledge into practice.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Bachelor's degree with major course work in social or technical field, and Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science or related field desirable, and 4-5 years experience in the analysis and dissemination of information plus supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree in one of the same areas of study is preferred. A background in educational research, such as institutional research, retention and student success, or enrollment management research is desirable, and a working knowledge of college admissions and financial aid is also a plus.
