Position Summary:

The Eastman Community Music School (ECMS), a division of the renowned Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, offers music lessons, ensembles, and classes to community members of all ages and backgrounds. ECMS serves approximately 1,700 students during the school year and hundreds more each summer. From pre-school and early childhood programs, to college prep and diploma programs, to adult ensembles and classes, ECMS nurtures and inspires students at all levels.


  • Teach private lessons according to a schedule formed in agreement with the school and students.

  • Prepare students for ECMS exams/juries NYSSMA and MCSMA solo festivals, youth orchestra auditions, summer programs, competitions, and college auditions

  • Summer teaching is encouraged but is optional.

  • Evaluate assigned student spring juries and exams.

  • Facilitate and encourage students to participate in annual performances (recommended two per student). These may include ECMS showcase, general, or program recitals, as well as studio recitals or masterclasses.

  • Communicate in a timely, clear and professional manner via email with students and their families about information pertaining to lessons, recitals and all policies.

  • Attend 3 full faculty meetings and 3 string department meetings annually and answer/participate in timely and professional email communications with ECMS colleagues, staff and administration, and the department chair.

  • If needed and appropriate:

  • Participate in sub-committees

  • Coach chamber music ensembles TAR Instructors will communicate available days/times to the chamber music coordinator.

  • Mentor ECMS interns, as requested by String Department Chair.

  • Participate in school-wide or department outreach, such as biannual “open house” events, Winterfest (Dec) and Springfest (May) program recitals and pedagogical discussions and initiatives outside of department meetings.


  • Proven record as an outstanding teacher and active, performing musician at a professional level of artistry.

  • Expertise in starting new students and teaching children through adults

  • MM or DMA degree preferred

  • Strong desire to recruit students and grow the ECMS cello studio

  • Involvement in national professional organizations (CMS, ASTA)

  • Additional areas of expertise or interest: Chamber Music, Administrative skills
