The Discovery Services Librarian is the collection-based domain expert for River Campus Libraries’s (RCL’s) discovery services. Leveraging metadata expertise to ensure successful implementation of key enterprise systems (including Primo, Alma, Preservica, ArchivesSpace and others), they provide leading-edge and user-focused approaches to enhance the discovery and access of RCL’s rich and unique collections. They rely on established and emerging standards and best practices to support interoperable integration of library systems and services and contribute to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the library’s collections through discovery-focused projects. The Discovery Services Librarian supports cross-libraries discovery and local needs, serving as a critical connection between Metadata Services, Digital Initiatives, and Performance & User Engagement.


  • Develop and support tools and experiences that leverage collection-based metadata, extending access to library collections and services, and proactively improving the patron discovery experience in collaboration with colleagues in Digital Initiatives.

  • Develop and deliver ongoing assessment and analysis of patron experience and discovery workflows to identify improvement opportunities. Collaborate with colleagues in Performance & User Engagement on discovery-focused assessment projects.

  • Surface collections that highlight UR’s key research and teaching strengths and help grow the university’s reputation.

  • With colleagues in the Scholarly Research and Curation Portfolio, develop and implement tools and workflows to support patron engagement and empowerment (e.g., demand-driven acquisition tools).

  • Other duties as assigned



MLIS degree and 2+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 2 years’ experience in an academic environment

  • Demonstrated experience managing and configuring library discovery systems

  • Demonstrated experience integrating library discovery systems and related metadata-based library systems

  • Experience with descriptive metadata creation and management including MARC/RDA and one or more non-MARC metadata formats

  • Familiarlity working with Integrated Library Systems (Ex Libris’s Alma preferred), library discovery platforms (Ex Libris’s PrimoVE preferred), and other library management systems (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Preservica, LibApps)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, workflows, and best practices in search, discovery, and metadata


  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) and an understanding of their value and centrality to metadata work

  • Familiarity with library technology standards and protocols such as OAI/PMH, Z39.50, MARC, etc.

  • Knowledge of assessment and user engagement best practices

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills and ability to form strong connections with colleagues across the libraries and University
