GENERAL PURPOSE:
The River Campus Libraries (RCL) of University of Rochester (UR) seeks a creative, collaborative and forward-looking leader to direct the dynamic portfolio of Science and Engineering Libraries and Research Initiatives. Reporting to the Assistant Dean level, the incumbent is a member of the Leadership Team and has an organization-wide scope.
The Director leads a team of highly-skilled staff responsible for science and engineering libraries and RCL initiatives that underpin UR’s research enterprise . The incumbent will ensure that RCL’s science and engineering programs, projects, and spaces are grounded in rich insights of faculty, researcher, and student academic needs, while also supporting transdisciplinary learning and research. In close collaboration with RCL and UR colleagues, the Director designs and implements research data management and sharing, curriculum support, and research intelligence operations that deepen support for student research and learning and enhance institutional research productivity and impact.
The incumbent will be responsible for shepherding a new slate of data services, bolstered by two inaugural professional positions (Data Curator and Reproducibility Librarian), and bringing together a full team of STEM-based liaison librarians, a data team of three, and a data analyst as a key resource for the library’s collaboration with UR’s new Office for Data Insights.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Science and Engineering Scholarship and Learning Initiatives
Work with the Learning Initiatives Department and other RCL teams to establish and continuously improve RCL’s learning support service model, based on contemporary pedagogical practices, grounded in student and faculty academic needs, and aligned with RCL’s strategies
Lead staff in delivering this learning support program, customized for the science and engineering disciplines
Coach and assist the department’s team and users to navigate changes in the information and education landscape
Develop staff competence in data literacy, AI, research data management and sharing, and open scholarship (OA, OER, Open Pedagogy, Open Source, Open Data, etc.)
Nurture the development of innovative programs utilizing digital and physical spaces to support science and engineering and transdisciplinary initiatives
Foster the incorporation of emerging technology into programs and initiatives
Supporting the Research Enterprise
Create workflows to measure and understand the impact of the UR’s research enterprise and develop strategies to advance the reputation of the institution
Lead the development of bibliometric and research intelligence services for UR
Collaborate with RCL’sScholarly Communication unit and colleagues to create robust scholarly communication services focused on scholarly profile management, broader impacts, and open research practices
Grow relationships with research support and research evaluation units like the Office of Global Engagement, Institutional Research, Office of Research and Project Administration, and the Vice President of Research Office
Remain current on trends and issues related to research impact, rankings, scholarly communications, research policy, and research infrastructure
I nnovating Research Data Support
Lead collaborations with RCL departments and other UR libraries to prototype and develop projects that transform how the library collects, showcases, and shares research materials and university research outputs
Identify opportunities to grow and improve the library’s and the university’s research infrastructure
Lead the development of new services, supports, and collaborative offerings as part of larger campus research initiatives and research intelligence operations
Work closely with library partners to shape and direct the work of library professionals across the disciplines in support of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research
Leadership & Management
Develop high-impact departmental goals that directly support RCL’s strategic aims and encourage robust cross-unit/library and cross-functional work
Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for staff, including formal performance reviews
Ensure staff have access to ongoing and relevant leadership and skill development opportunities
Nurture and grow the department’s agile, high-trust, and strategically-focused culture
Ensure that team member workloads are balanced in relation to input from other directors with system-wide responsibilities, including collections and learning initiatives.
Miscellaneous Duties
Participate in RCL-wide initiatives that advance the library’s mission toward customer service, research, learning, and collections
Maintain professional collaborations with River Campus Libraries colleagues and other campus constituencies
Contribute to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, research, writing, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Post-graduate degree in library and information science from an A.L.A.-accredited (or equivalent) institution required
2+ years management experience, including leading projects and teams preferred
5+ years job-related experience in an academic or research library preferred
Experience developing and cultivating relationships and partnerships required
Experience collaborating across disciplines/fields required
Experience delivering high-impact initiatives and programs required
Facilitation, training, or teaching experience required
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: science and engineering library programs, data visualization, research impact metrics, computer programming, open science, research data management, learning spaces, or scholarly communicationrequired
Working knowledge of digital tools and methodologies that enhance the researcher/learner experience required
Cultural competency, recognizing users as unique individuals with personalized experiences required
Ability to remain current in best practices related to student success in higher education required
Communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to negotiate and speak thoughtfully to specific needs/concerns required
Demonstrated commitment to teamwork/collaboration and ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community required
Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skillsrequired
Experience developing andmanaging projects across the entire project lifecycle required
Emotional intelligence required
Experience working in a science and/or engineering library or the delivery of programs to faculty and students in these disciplines preferred
Experience in overseeing learning spaces preferred
Demonstrated ability to discover, and quickly become competent using, new technologies, software, and devices; willingness to explore the use of innovative technologies with a high tolerance for risk, ambiguity, and failure required
Ability to form strong, collaborative connections required

Pay Range
Pay Range: $ 60,000 - $125,000 Annually
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
