Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Digital Scholarship Designer supports faculty and student research through the creation of digital tools and platforms in order to create new knowledge and technology-rich experiential learning opportunities. The DS Designer consults primarily with faculty and graduate students to help troubleshoot research challenges and provide recommendations on interface design and user experience, with a focus on faculty grant-funded projects. Reporting to the Director of Digital Scholarship and Studio X (the hub for Extended Reality at UofR), the DS Designer participates in strategic conversations around digital scholarship, immersive technologies, and related platforms; collaborates to provide feedback on potential digital scholarship and extended reality projects; and supports application development in collaboration with research teams. Stays current on emerging trends in UI in 2D and 3D design.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Digital Scholarship and XR Consultations

  • Assist in providing consultations to faculty and students regarding user interface design (UI)

  • Train faculty and students engaged in digital scholarship projects on related tools, platforms, and design concepts

  • Work with DS colleagues to determine project feasibility, design requirements, phases, and timelines

    Digital Scholarship Project Management

  • Participate in project team meetings with faculty, staff, and students

  • Communicate with stakeholders to manage project expectations and deadlines

  • Work with DS Developer, faculty and student teams to build rapid prototypes in support of grant applications

Project Development

  • Implement sustainable infrastructure, including documentation and versioning

  • Design and build tools and platforms that facilitate research opportunities and knowledge creation

  • Implement designs using Styled Components, SASS, CSS, or equivalent in line with industry standards

  • Maintain and review legacy projects to be sure the adhere to principles of accessible design

Support for Emerging Strategic Priorities

  • Provide guidance and information on emerging trends and new technologies

  • Identify and run pilot projects to test new technologies that align with emerging strategic priorities

  • Participate in River Campus Libraries and University committees, meetings, and events.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Professional Development

  • Explore new trends in design and front-end development for 2D and 3D

  • Participate in professional networks and organizations to expand knowledge base and share our work with a broader community

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus relevant user interface design experience (degree + 1 year of practical work experience either through a job, internship, or project)

  • User Interface (UI) design following industry standard best practices

  • Implementation of UI designs using CSS, Sass, or Less

  • Experience with at least one CMS framework (ex. Drupal, WordPress, Omeka)

  • Version control software (Git)

  • Experience translating user ideas and design mock-ups to working prototypes

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and engage with stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a high degree of accountability

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite

  • Strong knowledge of collaborative design software (ex. Figma, Sketch, Framer)

  • Strong knowledge of HTML5

  • Working knowledge of web standards, including designing for accessibility

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • Digital Humanities tools and platforms

  • 3D Modeling experience (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Substance Suite)

  • UI design for extended reality (XR) experiences
