Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The dental hygienist has responsibility for providing direct patient care at school-based and community outreach clinics, which includes: prophylaxis and fluoride treatment, scaling and root planing, sealants, and x-rays. Uses available resources to assist in day-to-day operations and to produce quality products/services. The candidate is also responsible for administration and direct patient care related to the NYS Sealant Program Grant.

Specific Job Duties and Percent of Time:

  • Provide prophylaxis and fluoride treatment; scaling and root planing; obtain a comprehensive medical and dental health history; complete an oral facial examination; probe for and assess periodontal disease; take x-rays; place sealants; individualize oral hygiene instruction and provide dietary counseling; assist dentist and dental residents, as needed. (50%)

  • Provide clerical support and manage ongoing recall system as appropriate. Supports the Coordinator by assisting in the oversight of all daily and ongoing activities of the clinic. Completes QA record review forms and monthly medical emergency kit inspection log. (5%)

  • Act as a resource person to parents, teachers, nurses, and other school officials. Represents the Department of Community Dentistry in the community, schools, day care centers, and at health fairs. (10%)

  • Conduct community, individual, and classroom education sessions as appropriate. Provides classroom education to all Pre-K and Kindergarten classes. (5%)

  • Participate in department research and screening projects as needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, project coordination, data recording and management, clinical activities related to projects, such as prophylaxis, plaque and saliva collection, patient screening, and distribution of patient products. (30%)

Education and Experience:

Graduate of dental hygiene program and New York State Dental Hygiene license required. Two to three years’ dental hygiene experience preferred.
