Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Provide database administration for multiple Microsoft SQL database platforms and data warehouses utilizing knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and RDBMS functionality. Install, maintain, and customize Windows Server operating system and Microsoft SQL Server database software. Monitor and tune operating systems and Microsoft SQL Server database software to affirm optimal performance is being achieved from the software and hardware installed. Provide problem determination and implement remediations in support of Windows Server operating system / Microsoft SQL database software. Project manage major software implementations by defining the project plan, identifying the required resources, coordinating the tasks of the project team, and tracking the project schedule. Communicate to staff planned and implemented changes and status of problem resolution. Be responsive to end-user and IS requests for services. Coordinate activities with staff, including applications, Customer Services, the Help Desk, and the Data Center.

Specific Responsibilities:

Under general guidance from the Systems and Database Services Manager and with some latitude for independent judgment and initiative be responsible for:

Operating Systems/ Database Software (65%)

  • Perform software installations, maintenance, and customization in a controlled environment that demonstrate thorough testing of the product including interfaces with other components.

  • Ensure the implementation process (move from test to production) is as seamless and non-disruptive to production systems, as possible.

  • Provide the necessary training to applications or computer operations staff for new functions / features associated with either new product installations or maintenance enhancements.

  • Design, implement, test, and monitor backup and recovery procedures for operating system, database software, databases, and application software. Ensure systems are recoverable.

  • Evaluate new software products, new or enhanced software features of installed software, and recommend a direction for implementation based on the value and impact the new or enhanced feature may provide the environment.

  • Provide Database Administration including data transformation duties (ETL etc.), for the various database management software packages installed. This includes but is not limited to database design and / or database definition.

    Performance and Availability Monitoring (10%)

  • Use the operating system I database monitors installed to determine if all necessary components of the operating system and I or database system are functioning and accessible.

  • Monitor end-user response time for production applications to ensure consistent and acceptable performance. Also, certify that service level agreements are being met.

  • Periodically (at least on a quarterly basis) review performance data from the operating system and the database environments to determine if performance objectives are being met. Recommend and implement performance-tuning changes based on this review.

  • Use the tools available to monitor the performance, capacity, and usage of the disk storage subsystem. Monitor dataset placement and allocations to insure established guidelines are followed, space is not being misused, and 1/0 rates are within acceptable limits.

    Problem Determination and Resolution Support (15%)

  • Collaborate with computer operations, applications development, end users, and software vendors to provide first level support for problems that are related to the operating systems or database software environments. When necessary assist applications development with problem determination and resolution for database related application issues.

  • Respond promptly to all problems keeping in mind the computing environment supports a user community that requires access to critical business information 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

  • Rotate primary / secondary / backup on-call for off-hours support with other staff members during which time it is expected all pages received from the operations center are answered with a return telephone call that meets organizational standards (currently within 15 minutes of receiving the page).

  • When necessary respond to critical problems in person at the operations center and remain on-site until the problem is resolved and all operating system / database components impacted are available and accessible.

    Technical and Project Management (10%)

  • Maintain a current knowledge of technology and an expert level of software skills through self-study programs, reading technical journals, attending job related seminars, and personal development conferences that develop and strengthen technical as well as inter-personal skills.

  • Function as a technical resource for members of the operating systems and database group, applications development, computer operations, and the end user community.

  • Develop and maintain operating system / database software documentation that is necessary to support the products installed.

  • Maintain an awareness of current projects and deadlines and assign priorities as required. Complete projects on time and within budget constraints.

  • When designated as a project leader perform project management duties such as: coordinating the involvement of IS, vendor and end users, supervising other team member's day to day efforts insuring project related tasks are complete, and tracking and communicating the project status to management.

  • Use project planning tools and methodologies to develop and track tasks associated with large projects.

    Requirements:

    Bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Business, Statistics, Science or Engineering and 2 to 3 years of related experience, equivalent combination of education and related work experience is required.

    Preferred Requirements:

    Three years of experience supporting Windows Server 2016/2019 operating systems and Microsoft SQL Server 2012 thru 2019 database software with Microsoft SQL certification for version 2016 or above.
